Well, as of last Saturday, I have grounded my daughter Natalie up to and including a week after her own wedding and she isn't even four years old yet. The reason for the grounding is her behavior at my cousin's wedding last week. It was a late afternoon wedding, so I knew there would be trouble because it would prevent a nap for either Natalie or myself. Don was unable to attend because of business so I also knew I would have complete responsibility for her behavior during the wedding ceremony. Her first mistake was tripping on the landing leading into the building where the wedding was to be performed. She scraped her elbow badly and screamed as if she were dying. The trip was not necessarily her fault, but for Natalie, blood doesn't call for a bandage. It calls for a crusade. She had to get sympathy from everybody - friends and strangers alike. Everytime I turned my back she walked to strangers to show them her elbow and start to cry. Within 10 minutes, 200 people thought I was abusing my child and if it hadn't been in a public place, they might have been right. I finally sedated her with a mouthful of candy and convinced her that sitting primly on a chair was a good idea for the wedding. However, luck was not with me. She saw Charlotte, another cousin who is Natalie's age. As the strains of the -- wedding march began, Natalie yelled a greeting to Charlotte and ran across the room to embrace her, almost tripping the bride as she was coming down the aisle. My sister-in-lagrabbed both of them and took them to a corner while the wedding was performed. Following the wedding we went to a reception where 1 had hoped to renew the acquaintance of many long lost relatives. Apparently so did Natalie. Everytime I turned around she was sitting on somebody's lap helping them spill their w food. The high point came when Don finally showed up just in time to catch Natalie trying to pull the polka dots off an elderly lady's dress. Don suggested it would be safer to take her into another room where the gifts were being displayed and unwrapped. She quickly outsmarted Don by trapping hirr. in that room, where he barely succeeded in catching the end of a collapsed gift table whose table legs she had unlatched. She disappeared into the crowd as Don screamed for me to help him. After restoring the table, we both decided our relatives could stay long lost as we hauled her out of there (but not before she spilled a bowl of wedding punch onto a beautifully polished hardwood floor). Both Don and I have sworn to never take her to another wedding including her own. I'll drink to that. You Can Go Back to School SLIMMER!
