Show Sundav. August Dear Judy Love: My young daughter, nine, wants to learn how to crochet. Can you suggest an easy and fun item she could start with' F.L., Davtona Beach, Fla. Dear F.L.: A baby blanket for her doll would be a perfect way to start. Use a knitting worsted and a size J hook. Chain stitch for about 18 inches for the foundation. Then make two double crochets in the second stitch from the needle. Continue making two dou Pants Begin With Good Measurements By APRYL COX men's pants begin with accurate measurements and proper pattern adjustments. Start by scrutinizing the body for problem areas. Notice if the pants are too tight or too loose at the waist or hips, if the pants droop or cut him in two because the crotch length is too long or too short, or if the hems fali around the ankle bones. Take measurements from a pair of pants that fit well, or from the body. If measuring on the body, tie a string around the waist and write down the following statistics. measure from crotch seam to pants 'Inseam heam. measured around the string. Waist measure over the fullest part of the hips. Hips Also record the distance between the waist and hip g line. measure from top of waist- Center back seam band to inseam. When adjusting the width of a pattern, as for the waist or hips, increase or decrease only the difference between your measurement and the one recorded on the back of the pattern. Ease is added to the tissue pattern pieces and is essential for comfort. Do not eliminate the ease. Alternations on one pattern piece generally mean adjustments on several others. Adding or subtracting length from pant legs needs to be done on both front and back. Enlarging or reducing the waistband also means adjustments must be made to the pants front and back. An addition or subtraction to the waist and hips of one inch or less may be taken from the side seams by of the total addrawing on or shaving off justment from the front and back side seams. Taking off from each side seam will add up to one inch. The waistband must be altered accordingly. h For more than a adjustment, the pants pattern must be slashed and either spread or overlapped. Split the pattern diagonally from the waist to the side seam and overlap or spread the total amount on both front and back. Draw the new waist and side seams. For large hips, add in both directions. Add width at side seams and center back, dividing equally the amount needed. Split the pattern from center back to side seam and separate, tapering to nothing at the side seam. For small hips, make a tuck or cut the pattern horizontally and overlap at center back, tapering to the side seam. Shave the extra amount in width from the side seam and center back. A protruding stomach calls for more width and length. Add needed width to the center front and side seams, and length at the crotch and waist. thigh and calf measurements may be a considertaion if the man has heavy legs or well developed muscles. Buy a pattern with measurements which approximate your statistics, adjusting those that vary. Vertical measurements, as the inseam and outseam, can be measured on the tissue pattern and should be your exact measurement (remember to allow for hem and seam allowances).
