Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Stewart of Payson, is spending this summer as a member of the Shakespearean Festival Company. The annual festival, which is celebrating its 21st consecutive summer on the campus of Southern Utah State College in Cedar City, picked Stewart as one of 100 persons who work with the company. More than 1.200 people applied for positions with the festival. Parry plays Montague in Romeo and Juliet" and Conn in "As You Like It." This is his first year with the festival. "I enjoy especially the repertory aspect of the Utah Shakespearean Festival," Parry says. It gives each of the company members opportunity to develop skills in more than one area, or to broaden the technical skills which the persons brings with him to the experience." Edie Sedgewkk: Fall From the Top - She was the NEW YORK (NEA) golden girl of the '60s. Edie Sedgwick had it all beauty, wealth, breeding, brains. Vogue maga g zine, for whom she modeled fashions, dubbed her a "youthquak-er.- " Andy Warhol, for whom she starred in celebrated underground films like "Vinyl," dubbed her a "superstar." Bob Dylan wrote the song "Just Like a Woman" about her. And Edie Sedgwick blew it all in a orgy of madness stunning four-yeShe barely lived and burnt-ou- t. drugged-ou- t, out the decade Dead, age 28. Her story makes for this summer's most talked-abou- t book, "Edie: An American Biography," by Jean Stein, edited with George Plimpton. Told through the voices of relatives and friends, "Edie" details both the disintegration of a patrician New England family, the Sedgwicks, and the underside of American pop culture in the '60s. It is not pretty reading, though it is compelling. George Plimpton, who helped Jean Stein assemble the oral biography, knew Edie's father, the handsome Francis "Duke" Sedgwick, very well. backCame from the same upper-cruground. "A vibrant, vigorous man," recalls Plimpton. Also an unbalanced who had been one, a advised by doctors never to have children. He and his wife had eight, raising them in a succession of mammoth, Utopian ranches in Santa Barbara, Calif., where Duke moved because of his asthma. "What seemed like a paradise wasn't," says Plimpton. "Something was at work there, dooming them." By the time Edie came of age, two of her older brothers had already committed suicide. ar Warhol crowd." For Edie, says Plimpton, Warhol's Factory was "a firmament. There was a lot of industry, some pretension of art. It was curiously appealing, totally like visiting the slums of foreign Bombay. Like Edie, there were a lot of others there who had lost their way." She became Warhol's superstar, headliner of his curious films and of his even more curious entourage which, through Edie, now had access to the "A" parties. "He saw in her an entree to the levels of society to which he aspired," says Plimpton. "Did he exploit her? That's hard to say. The environment exploited her, the drugs, the alcohol, the lack of direction. "Edie's story is in the American tradition of the beautiful and damned. I think we've always been fascinated by the downfall of people who have After a brief stint as an art student in Cambridge, Mass., Edie found her way to the New York of the early '60s, and to Warhol's bizarre combination art studioliving theater, the Factory. There she flourished, then rapidly declined. "Hers was a tremendously dramatic descent," says Plimpton. Plimpton knew her. "She had very little to say," he recalls, "but she had this guileless charm. She was slightly breathless, utterly charming. You wanted to protect her. We were friendly, though I didn't spend four years in the Warhol toilet with her.
