Show Page THE HERALD. Provo, Utah. Sunday. August 18 22. 1982 Busin tOQQ What is happening and the business world Ufahns Invited To World Meet Chamber Topics The Used Car Business Ey NEVIN LIMBURG Executive Vice President Provo Area Chamber of Commerce (This week's article is a guest editorial while Nevin Limburg is vacationing. It is written by Wayne Weston, a Chamber member and owner of Autocraft, Inc.) The used car market is alive and well in Utah County. The economic slump has been inflicting some casualties on the car market, but the dealer in used cars at least can roll with the punches when changes in supply and demand occur. The market has seen some in- developments over the teresting past few years. Variations in demand and supply which used to be seasonal now occur over the course of several weeks. Certain models can become "cold" overnight, i.e. domestic passenger cars with diesel engines. More recently the "used car" has enjoyed an increase in value - especially those getting reasonable gas mile?.ge. People are "making do" - spending more on repairs and generally becoming more aware of the need for good transportation, not just cheap transportation. The new downsized models beginning in 1978 are now popular as used cars teen months ago people could afford Utah's Lieutenant Governor David S. Monson sits? At a minimum of 500 miles per month divided by miles per gallon the savings is exposed: 500 miles at 15 miles per gallon equals 33.5 gallons at $1.25 costing $41.87. The same formula at 25 mpg equals 20 gallons or $35 spent: a comparative savings of $6.87 dollars per month. Not very impressive, is it. to buy "new" and get mileage. Now the new car prices are sufficiently high to cause those same buyers into the "used" market. The fallacy of economy is being tested and found wanting. Just because a car gets good mileage does not mean that it is cheap to own. There are payments to be made, interest piling up and gasoline to buy. When the average new car approaches $10 000 things get serious. When a customer buys a car for economy the idea is to save money. But in order for a fuel efficient car to be economical it has to be driven. Where is the efficiency if the car sixth Theory On Interest Rates By United Press International SALT LAKE-CITSome Utah brokers (UPI) - !and securities dealers believe that a decline in inrates was the key factor in Tuesday's record terest I stock market performance. I think it is a technical rally, based on lower interest ; rates and bargain hunting." Richard Lee, of the Salt Lake office of Merrill, ', Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, said he had noted J economist Henry Kaufman's forecast for a continued decline in interest rates. David Pickett, of Dean Witter Reynolds, also noted Kaufman's comments, and concluded the stock market had reacted to them, as well as to the oversold position it has been in the past few weeks. 9-- being sought. Clyde Construction Co. was the low bidder and received the contract to construct the southeast portion of the freeway from 300 East to 1100 East in Salt Lake City. The freeway will be depressed from surrounding neighborhoods, as required by the environmental impact statement, which involved removal of almost one million cubic yards of dirt.
