Show 20B Sunday Herold svoay, rsmY 1. 1970 lo7ll 1 JACKSON RULON B. HOWARD W. MYERS Chairman Committee On Roads and Highways Governmental Affairs Committee Chairmaa Taxation, Planning Occupy Attention of Committee On Governmental Problems Affairs The Governmental Committee of the Provo Chamber of Commerce, headi by Jackson B. Howard, held a series of meetings, with major attention focusing on taxation and county planning. As an outgrowth of its discussions, the committee has recommended to the Chamber of Commerce board of directors the creation of a separate committee on taxation. Representative Needed Said Mr. Howard: "We felt that the Chamber was not adequately represented at budgetary meetings of the various taxing agencies affecting Provo City, nor did we have available to us composite Information concerning school district taxation, Provo City taxation, county taxation, and various tax assessments of other sorts that affect our members. "We further felt that a committee dedicated to this purpose could become knowledgeable to the extent that it vould provide an effective lobby for the interest of Chamber members with the governmental units who establish our tax burdens. Urges 'Continuity "In this regard," Mr. How ard added, "we felt that the questions of taxation were so important and so complex that committee membership should provide a means of cantinuing or overlapping membership so that there can be a continuity of knowledge retained in the committee from year to year." The Governmental Affairs Committee, Mr. Howard said, visualizes that the tax committee could be a most valuable arm of the Chamber that could wield an important influence in shaping attitudes and actions that are realistic and in keeping with needs and financial , capability. Planning Proposal Relative to planning, the committee stressed the importance of both Provo City and Utah County anticipating building needs and laying groundwork for location, design and construction. Mr. Howard's committee met with Stanley Roberts, chairman of the Utah County Commission, who apprised the group of present county programs and efforts along this line. "We were still of the mind that a commission should be formed and we have submitted Highways Group Submits Recommendations for '70 The Highway Committee of the Provo Chamber of Commerce was extremely active during 1969, according to Chairman Rulon W. Myers. The committee, along with the Orem Chamber of Commerce and a representative from Utah County made and presented to the State Highway Department an illustrated report on the suggested changes of the signing on Interstate 15 in the county. The State Highway Cor.imis-sio- n appreciated the report and is v" !;ng these changes to eliminate the present confusion of these signs. The committee met several times with the State Highway Department concerning the new highway up Provo Canyon to make sure the best route is taken to protect the scenic view of fte canyon and the placement of the city parks. It is believed that through these efforts these .goals have been accomplished. The committee also participated in a program to see that city streets were maintained and cleaned and that traffic lights were installed on the dangerous intersection of University Avenue and 1700 North. The committee's recommended program of work for 1970 will include: 1. Study and evaluate Provo City streets, including a cleaning program for streets and gutters, a survey of dangerous streets, and repair of streets and signs at corners. 2. Work for close cooperation with state, city and county on streets of Provo City. 3. Build good relations between Provo City and State Highway Commission. 4.
