YOUNG Progress to the Airport Committee of the Provo Chamber of Commerce was spelled out with the words "Omni," and Air Utah, as work continued in the effort to establish the Provo City Airport as a freight station. The terminal Omni was d to the committee by the Utah Aeronautics Commission for installation sometime before June of 1970. The Omni is a special radio broadcasting device which is used by all pilots m navigation and in landing approaches. When it is installed, it will become a part of a nationwide chain of transmitters and will virtually put Provo on the map as a bona fide airport. Increase Traffic C.J. Harmon, chairman of the airport committee, indicates that when the homing device is installed it will substantially increase the traffic for the airpro-luse- Committee Chairman Conventions, Tourism Up Cash Inflow Tourism has developed into Che third largest industry in the West, and in order to receive a share of this growing industry and provide jobs for this area, we must increase the tourist and convention activitiy in the Provo and surrounding area, according to Chester Davis, chairman of the tourist and Convention Committee. With the help of Frank Earl, Max Hansen, Dr. J. C. Moffitt and manager William Wother-apoo- n, plans were presented to the board of directors for erection of a "Welocem to Provo" aign at University Avenue and Interstate 15. The committee awarded the contract to a local industry to have this steel sign erected in ffie spring of 1970. With the cooperation of the City Commission, land has been made available to erect this sign. It win be lighted and landscaped so that k wiD stand out to the passing motorist Training Program A tourist training program was held in conjunction with '"he Utah State University for the purpose of training women who worked in the new Tourist Information Center office located on the City and County grounds. Over 7500 cars stopped at this location seeking information about the community and the area. There were 15 'conventions held in Provo during IP 5 with about 2000 persons in attendance. The committee, under the direction of Mr. Davis, held several meetings planning a program on "How to Get Conventions in Provo." This information will be used during 1970 as a selling piece to attract conventions to this area in the future years. The committee assisted the new Tra-VCenter to open on Interstate 80. Many maps and brochures of this area were furnished to them by the committee and they also assisted n the arrangement in locating a display of Utah County m the center. There were three locations m Provo for tourists to obtain information during 1969 County Building grounds, Pioneer Museum at the North Park on Fifth West, and the Chamber of Comoierce office. port The' unit should also increase the impact of the Provoased flight operations of Interwcst Corp., which grew out of Prow's own Air Utah Airlines during 1969. James B. Burr, Provo, president of Air Utah, and now chairman of the board and president of Interwest Corp., supervises five division, that of aircraft sales, fixed base operations, airlines operations, rotary wing operations and the Air Utah flight operations. Besides flights from Provo, service has now been extended to include bases at various places in the west. Facilities Improved The facilities at the airport have been improved with the completion of the much needed parking and tie down ramp. The next problem facing the committee is in getting approval for a weather and flight service station at the airport. The issue arose during the recent period of fog which blanketed the Salt Lake City and Ogden facilities for many days, causing airlines to overfly the state to stations in Idaho, Nevada, and California. "People around here are tired of being fWn so far away when mi m mummi m around here is Mike said Jense, memclear," ber of the airport committee.
