The legislature is expected to change an error of last year regarding holidays which would have set the Memorial Day observance for May 23. The expected change by the present legislature would move this holiday back to May 30 - and you can bet the fish and game board will not open the fishing season on that day after the multiple criticism when it was done that way some years ago. Since long time board policy establishes the opener as on nearest the first Saturady in June each year it follows that it So, with just over five months to will now be June 1 old the remember saying that much of the fishwait, not the fish. ing gear is made to fool the fisherman, look we through our time This reminder comes each 10 dollar of the likes the remember tackle boxes or winkie wobbler "sure get" salmon plug which never caught a fish. 27-2- two-poi- OPEN than safe. Add to Flaming Gorge such popular ice fishing waters like Brigham City (Mantua) lake, Willard Bay, and Utah Lake where year around angling sees and increasing number of us join the game. And as we add to the number let us add caution too, because boy that water gets cold at this season. 57-5- 4 Cavemen Remain In Title Picture L w i Sunday Hercld 17 Payson - Caution is the watchword whenever ice fishing is the game. We were vividly reminded of this when BJ1 George retried on such a trip a week ago out Manila way Flaming Gorge. Bill said that he witnessed three incidents where s i fishermen broke through the ice. in two Fortunately cases they were over shallow water and in the other a companion was near by to help the i out. We later verified with local conservation angler I officers the area that these were not the only such accidents irwhich .;. so often result m needless loss of life. In this case the January "thaw" of recent warm temperatures was th mlnrit been relatively safe ice out for a couple of weeks changed to an unsafe condition in just a couple of days. Until very recent years few native Uthans did any ice fishing at all. I.Iain reason was that few fish and game waters were open to winter angling. in the mid 50's a number of waters have been added to the angling list. Then, some six years ago, the big new Flaming Gorge lake became a major attraction wnen ice fishing for fair - eized rainbow began to return some fine creel limits. A few words of caution seem in order here as the sport is popularized and more of we neophytes take up the game. First rule is never to go out on ice alone. One should be especially careful of the shore, and near shore ice, on reservoired lakes subject to winter water fluctuations. I The hole one cuts through the ice need be no more than a few inches in diameter to accomodate bringing out any fish taking the bait or lure. Any bole mere than 19 inches wide is a hazard to the next angler, and can prove a real trap when thinly frozen over prior to a new snow storm. A reminder of this last winter at the Gorge when several of us had fcone the easy route by axing out the thinner ice covering some old holes. Friend Ralph Benson was fishing through one of the larger ones when he pulled up the largest fish of the day. Just as he pulled it from the hole it flipped off the hook. Ralph lunged for it as it flopped back toward the water and, though he saved the fish, got an arm and shoulder wet as he headed into the deep. The hole was some 20 inches across. Experienced ice fishermen tell us they never go out without a sturdy pole or piece of lumber at least TERRY CARTER outstanding Payson player, gets control eight feet long.
