Show I Times OUTDOOR & fhavel Guide j Thursday, May 30 Page 26 Let's face it. Your fondest memory of tires is probably the big old swing you rode on during those carefree summer days. But times have changed. And today, -you need a tire dependable depend-able enough to carry you through your busy day and back home again. But which one? All season? Performance? Aqua? Or all-terrain light truck? Four easy steps to tire buying: 1. The first step is to determine whether or not you need new tires. All that's required is aquick visual inspection, inspec-tion, because today, automobile and light truck tires are manufactured with built-in. treadwear indicators. These in- dicators are the bars built into the bottom of the tread grooves that appear when 232" of the tread remains or approximately ap-proximately 20 of the tread is left. If you can see these bars, it is definitely time to replace the tire. 2. Tire size. The next thing youll want to determine is the proper size needed on your vehicle. Youll find this information informa-tion in your vehicle owner's manual. The size is also listed on the sidewall of you tire along with other tire attributes, including in-cluding speed ratings, mud and snow ratings, UTQG tread wear, traction and temperature ratings, the load range, and more. 3. Analyze your vehicle and driving. The next step in selecting the right tire is a close examination of both the type of vehicle you own and your particular par-ticular type of driving. We have grouped vehicles and driving into three categories: performance cars that include both classic performance perfor-mance cars and luxury sport sedans; traditional family vehicles; and multi-purpose vehicles. Within each category, we have recommended the Kelly tires that should best meet your needs. ' Performance cars Want to make the most of your performance perfor-mance car? It's easy. Just insist on performance tires! A performance tire has a spe cial tire construction that offers you more than a traditional, non-performance tire. For instance, in-stance, its sidewall s and tread are designed to deliver the true "feel" of the road along with added responsiveness and superior supe-rior handling. And, it's speed-rated. speed-rated. If you bought your car with performance tires, and like the way they handle and ride, you should replace them with comparable com-parable performance tires. Traditional family vehicles - Owners of sedans, station wagons, and mini vans typically look for tires that will deliver a quiet, comfortable ride along with excellent mileage. All-season or touring radials are good choices for these types of vehicles. You might also consider con-sider "Aqua" tires designed with large grooves or "channels" in the tread that help resist hydroplaning in wet weather. All three tire types are designed for driving on city streets or highways. And, they're good for year-round use, without the need to change over to snow tires. . Multi-purpose vehicles -Today's pickups, 4x4s, and sport utility vehicles are a major new driving force for today's women. In this category, you have a choice of several types of radial light truck tires. For those people who drive mainly on city streets or paved highways, but take an occasional oc-casional off-road adventure or need extra traction in mud or snow, there are all-terrain tires. What about the weather? Today, all-season radials are a popular year-round choice for the majority of automobile owners. All-season radials are designed to carry you and your family safely through rain, snow, sleet or whatever Mother Nature dishes out. And, choosing all-season radials saves you from the time and expense ex-pense of changing over to snow tires every year. If, however, you live in a northern state or mountainous region with extreme amounts of ice or snow, changing over to snow tires every winter may be a necessity. 4. Check your budget and needs. In reality, buying a tire isn't much different than buying anything else. In all cases, you must consider the price and your budget. In the case of buying tires, ask yourself questions like, "How long am I going to keep the vehicle?" "Will I be making lengthy trips?" Keep in mind that the cheapest tire is not always the best value, while the most expensive tire may not be required for your type of driv ing. Your local Kelly Dealer, ZCMI Auto Center in the University Mall, will be happy to help you determine which tire is just right for you! m. It.". I V r u yi "Room temperature" is 68 degrees F.
