From the pastoral Cache Valley to the high peaks of the Mount Naomi Wilderness; from the cobalt-blue waters of Bear Lake to the picture perfect villages vil-lages you see along the way, there are rides for every cyclist in this beautiful part of Utah Bear Lake and the surrounding surround-ing canyons offer a cool climate for biking during the. spring, summer, and fall. Traveling east through Logan Canyon, the view of the turquoise-colored lake from the summit will take your breath away. The lake is truly a jewel on the border between be-tween Utah and Idaho. Scenic 1 &4 Route 89 along Bear Lake is the most popular choice for travelers between Yellowstone or Jackson Hole and Salt Lake City. A 48-mile loop around the lake offers a fairly level ride for cyclists of various abilities. Many mountain trails are located lo-cated in nearby Logan Canyon with its scenic byway. Interpretive signs detailing detail-ing the lake's history and folklore will be installed this summer. This trail offers an alternative al-ternative way to access the shops and restaurants in town and to sample a famous Bear Lake Raspberry shake or other raspberry treats that are offered year-round. After a day of riding, enjoy a swim or a friendly game of volleyball vol-leyball on the beach. Bear Lake offers a variety of watersports from jetskiing and sailing to scuba diving. In the evening, see a melodrama at the Pick-leville Pick-leville Playhouse or dine at a local restaurant. Summer events include rodeos, music festivals, fes-tivals, county fairs, Raspberry Days in August, and a Moun-tainman Moun-tainman Rendezvous in mid-September. mid-September. New Resorts have sprung up around the lake, including the Harbor Village Resort. The Bear Lake Marina, just north of Garden City, has tripled in size to include a sheltered harbor, har-bor, concrete coat ramp, developed campsites, restrooms, shower facilities, a group-use pavilion, and visitor center. Other cycling routes are available to explore such as Little Lit-tle Mountain and White Pine Lake. The Little Mountain has a 45-mile loop rated moderate to.difficult depending on how you pace yourself and which way you go. For an easier time of it, ride the route clockwise clock-wise to avoid the steep climb up "Little Mountain." Either way the scenery is a superb blend of rolling farmland, historic villages, vil-lages, and friendly people. America's largest Swiss cheese factory is located in Amagla, where you may want to pick up some of the Cache Valley's own at the retail shop. Look for a feeding waterfowl in the marshes mar-shes along the way. The White Pine Lake Route is a clearly marked, 7-mile 7-mile excursion with packed earth-and-rock trail that climbs 2,000 feet as it winds through wildflower meadows, aspen groves, and tall conifers leading to White Pine Lake. The lake is a sight to behold, wedged between be-tween 9,700-foot Mt. Gog and 9,756-foot Mt. Magog, which still bears the scars of a 1987 avalanche and a 1988 wildfire.
