Show The Park Record O Section B Page B12 O Thursday, April 8, 1 993 StarFox offers crazy characters and a special memory chip By ANDY RYDER guest writer I attended an event recently at ShopKo in Sandy about StarFox, a new Super Nintendo game. At this event, a man actually parachuted out of a plane with what appeared to be a mattress as a parachute, and hand-delivered a StarFox cartridge. Former Utah Senator Jake Garn tried his hand at the game, and was "totally humiliated by Jeff's ability." The Jeff he refers to is Nintendo Champion Word Champion Jeff Hansen of Murray. characters, it has little Snoopy characters, and the ships look suspiciously like red dog houses. No, just kidding. You didn't really think Charles Schultz would totally "commercialize" his characters and have them remorselessly destroy villains, did you? Of course not At you up to snuff on new video game characters, I will how give a complete list of their personalities. FOX MCCLOUD is your character and his flying ability depends on who is playing. In the hands of experienced game player, he is a crackerjack pilot. In the Guest Ryder Hansen is a modest champ Jeff Hansen is the Nintendo World Champion. He went to Tokyo to take on the Champion of Japan. He won with nearly double his opponent's score. He enjoys basketball and computer programming. Jeff says he plays Nintendo a lot, but not as often as brother, Spencer. To become the champion, he "had to go to Hollywood and beat 500,000 competitors." He foresees a career with Nintendo as a game designer. The Murray resident seems very modest about his talents and would not stop playing the Nintendo game, StarFox, for his interview with Channel 4. StarFox is unique in that it uses the Super Fx chip, which allows it to hold more memory. It also uses polygon-type graphics and is the only Nintendo game to use polygons other than Out of This World. The plot is rather strange because instead of normal pilots as least not for free, anyway. Copyrighted characters require a lot of money. After all, Snoopy needs a lot of money to keeD his flying doghouse in good condition. High octane flying doghouse fuel costs $25 an ounce. Seriously, the characters are as follows: Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi (a raptor), Peppy Hare and Slippy Toad. FALCO LOMBARDI is an extremely obnoxious character who you often want to blast into cosmic dust. Unfortunately, you can't damage your wingmen so you have to be content with yelling at him. For instance, when he's being chased by an enemy and is about to be blasted, and you save him he tells you to mind your own business. Every once in a while I like to let him be blasted just for fun of it. PEPPY HARE acts a lot like our buddy Fox McCloud. SLIPPY TOAD is constantly being chased by enemies that you have to save him from. He could be in completely solitary room with no window or doors, but somehow, he would be chased by an enemy fighter. I have learned much playing StarFox, such as humility and triumph. I have also learned eyehand coordination. And I've learned that sometimes you just have to scream away at old Falco. Andy Ryder is an eleven-year-old who tries to get his teachers off task by asking questions that have no real answer. He is a Treasure Mountain Middle School sixth-grader. Homelessness does not mean hopeless submitted by AI Kohler Public Service Representative The Salvation Army, SLC If you are one of the 2,350 persons in Utah who are homeless, the warm days of spring and summer are a god send. The homeless population between be-tween the years 1991 to 1993 grew from a daily average of 1,834 to 2,354. Less than half of the homeless population on any day are sheltered. Only about 25 percent of the homeless population are employed, the remainder wander the STEEL ROOFS Installs over existing roofing Snow slides off FREE ESTIMATES SMITH ROOFING 649-5265 manufactured by streets with little hope or purpose. Officials of the state government of Utah estimate that between 60-70 60-70 percent of the homeless population come to Salt Lake City in search of food, a job and hope. On any day, Salt Lake City has about 1,700 homeless persons wandering the streets with little to do and no purpose. From the Office of Education come statistics that the number of homeless children in Utah has increased by over 40 percent since 1989. Almost half of this total was living in Salt Lake City. The homeless population in Utah has been increasing by 20-25 percent each year over the last five years. Homelessness is not just a problem, but a life threatening situation for over 4,635 children and 2,354 adults in Utah. This writer knows and calls homelessness a situation of life, and not just a problem that will go away by itself. We, the working and caring population of Salt Lake, must put forth a lasting plan of true concern. We must identify the most critically unmet needs of the homeless population in the Salt Lake area. Once these problems are identified identif-ied then the resources will be needed to overcome them. The mobilization mobili-zation of human and financial resources to develop a plan to fight the causes of homelessness would be a unique and substantial commitment by the citizens of the City of Salt Lake, and the residents of the Salt Lake Basin. The cost to the citizens of Salt Lake will be small compared to the number ot lives-that i-will be changed by the conversion of a life of homelessness to a life of reward and compensation. 03 CUD I Ax i! i! i! ! i i! !! ! i! i! !! i! i! i! i!' :!
