Seniors should file exemption Utahns age 65 and older should file their state income tax using the long form to take advantage of Utah's retirement exemption, the Tax Commission says. Unfortunately, many seniors are failing to take advantage of this tax break when they use the simpler short form, said Tax Commission spokesperson Janice J. Perry. "We see many Utah short forms coming in from people who apparently are eligible to claim the special $7, 500 exemption created by the Legislature to ease the tax burden on older Utahns," she said. On the short form-TC-40S-these taxpayers only can claim the federal Standard Deduction amount of $4,800--the amount allowed single filers over age 65-or $7,400 for marrieds filing jointly. However, if they file the Utah long form-TC-40mey can claim the federal Standard Deduction, plus Utah's retirement exemption of $7,500 per person. Married taxpayers are entitled to exclude $15,000 from Utah income tax if both are 65 or older. People with retirement income-pensions and annuitieswho are younger than 65 can claim a deduction of up to $4,800 against the pension income. Calibration!" CARDEN ACADEMY Frontage Road HIGHWAY 80 |
