DM SI by ANDREA MATHER Record staff writer As one of eight schools in the nation, members of Treasure Mountain Middle School's "Class Act" got a trip of a lifetime to Washington, D.C. The opportunity was part of the prize package the school received for garnering the Amway Newsweek magazine award for their restoration of the wetlands. Anni Schneider, TMMS science teacher, ' and two student representatives- Dylon Kelsch, TMMS student and Karen Massey, PCHS student were treated to a VIP tour of the nation's capital and participated in forums and discussion meetings. "The highlight of the whole thing was an environmental forum," said Schneider. Sen. Max Baucus of Montana hosted the special Senate Environmental Forum with members of the Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works as well as senators from the schools' respective states. Utah Senator Bob Bennett talked about the TMMS project for a few minutes and both Kelsch and Massey addressed the forum. When asked what she thought about the trip, Karen Massey said, "Great It was fantastic." The best part for her was when Bob Bennett asked them to stand and recognized them in front of the other senators. The teachers 2nd students also met with Katie McGinty who is the president's special assistant on environmental affairs. McGinty was impressed with the students' projects as well as their creativity, said Schneider. The students had breakfast with Bill Orton and received a flag, which had flown above the Capitol. They also toured the White House, the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials and the Vietnam Memorial. . The trip provided an opportunity for the group to exchange ideas. One of the projects they were most interested in was a book of poetry in English, French and Spanish that addressed the value of the wetlands, said Schneider. ' The last night was not any less memorable for the group, she said. The teachers and students ordered pizza and had many pies left over. From the hotel, which was two blocks from the White House, they began walking with the food and other extras from the hospitality room and distributing them to the homeless. Each of the "Class Act" schools received a $7,500 cash award to support their environmental program. The other winners were: Bamett Shoals Elementary School located in Athens, Ga; Jacksonville Elementary School from Jacksonville, Ore.; San Diego County Schools located in San Diego, Calif; Saint Bemadctte School from Lancaster, Ohio; Harry P. Andersen Middle School from Omaha, Neb.; Georgia Middle School located in St Albans, Vt and Northside Junior High School from Jennings, La.
