Show The Park Record Section A Thursday, April 8, 1 993 D Page A3 Lou Hudson asks county to aid hoops camp by SENA FLANDERS Record staff writer Park City resident and former NBA all-star Lou Hudson asked the Summit County Board of Commissioners Monday for assistance in increasing participation in his annual basketball and academic camp, saying involvement from all areas could help break down barriers between the towns in the county. Hudson is hoping to attract about 160 kids at a cost of about $1 15 for the week-long camp. "The big deal is numbers and arranging transportation," Hudson told the Commission April 5. He agreed to meet with the county recreation board April 6 to solicit more comments on his program. The one-week sessions (one for boys and another for girls ages 12 to 18), are built on a daily schedule of two hours of academics and four hours of basketball, Monday through Friday. In addition, a variety of guest speakers address issues focusing on the development of the "whole person." Students, who are grouped by both age and ability, are drawn from the entire Wasatch Front, although the majority are expected from Summit and Wasatch counties. "We need the county to help promote this and to get more participation," Hudson told the Commission. "If you can capture kids with sports, then you can give them a positive messagc. If we could get the numbers up and run buses from outlying areas then we could really make this thing work." Hudson's program works in conjunction with the Park City School District; Facilities and most personnel are being provided through the district and the high school. Area basketball coaches will staff the camp, with an anticipated ratio of one on-site coach for every 10 players. The academic portion of the camp has been developed by Park City 'We need the county to help promte this..." residents Michael and Nancy Garbett, through their company, Transition Management, Ind. Their "Student Effectiveness Program" is now being taught in four states and focuses on four major areas to help participants understand and integrate skills and techniques needed to achieve personal and academic effectiveness. The burning question How long will it take the fire department to respond in an emergency? For Park City Fire District officials, that was the burning question. Beginning in late 1992, fire officials began revising their expected response times to emergencies in the Park City area Their findings were presented in mid March. According to Park City Fire Chief Kelly Gee, the fire department should ideally be able to respond to all calls within three minutes. Given the sheer size of the Paik City district, the high rate of growth in surrounding regions and road construction on State Road 224 and U.S. Highway 40, however, Gee said such a speedy response is unlikely for most residents. Instead, he said, 80 percent of residents in the Park City Fire District can expect an engine within five minutes of their first call. For residents who live in the upper regions of Pinebrook and Summit Park, a fire truck may be more than 15 minutes away. The district will be using these projected response times to plan the construction of new fire stations. Continuing 1992's furious construction pace, the Summit County Planning Department issued a record number of building permits during March. According to a monthly report released by the department., 28 permits valued at $1,859,106 were issued during March. That is the most March permits issued in the last five years. To date, the county has issued 53 building permits. Thirty-six of those permits are in the Snyderville Basin, seven are in the South Summit area, and 10 are in the North Summit area. In the Snyderville Basin, 2,267 lots are vacant and waiting to be built on, the report noted.
