The group is up for the award for their design of a massive wetlands construction project in connection with new construction at the Salt Lake City International Airport. The project is one of the largest wetlands replacement programs ever undertaken in the United States. Park City Planning Commissioner and resident Bruce Erickson has been the manager on the project for two years. Sear-Brown Sear-Brown recently won a grand honor award from the Consulting Engineers Council of Utah for their work on the project. When it is completed in 1994, more than 465 acres of various wetland communities will be created, replacing more than 339 acres of wetlands associated with airport construction. The mitigation site consists of 1,500 acres west of a planned new runway. The plan calls for a complex ecosystem to sustain hundreds of aquatic and terrestrial plant and animal species present on the runway site and surrounding wetlands. In addition to open water habitats for waterfowl refuges, the project includes a mix of mudflats, saltgrass meadows, marshes and upland communities. Finalists will be judged on March 27 and 28 at the Westfields International Conference Center in Chantilly, Virginia. A distinguished panel of 26 judges hailing from engineering, architecture, government, media, academe and the military will determine winners from a field of 144 finalists. The winners will be announced at a luncheon on Tuesday, May 4, in Los Angeles in conjunction with ACEC's 1993 Annual Convention. This will be the first time the Engineering Excellence Awards ceremony will be held outside of Washington, and the first time it will occur at the annual convention. ACEC is a national professional association representing the business interests of more than 5,000 private-practice private-practice consulting engineering firms. ACEC members, who employ some 176,000 engineers, scientists, technicians and support staff, annually design more than $100 billion in constructed public works. What's for school lunch?
