It's not perfect, but this new Grand. Cherokee is solid, comfortable, capable, and luxurious. V' Laredo ' Limited, arid. Overland . models ,6f the Grand Cherokee are available avail-able with a smooth, powerful pow-erful &0L V6 turbo diesel engine that produces 2 15( horsepower and a whopping whop-ping 376 lb-ft of torque. The diesel is linked to a five-speed automatic transmission. trans-mission. This exceptional engine is quiet and refined, and it ups fuel efficiency for the Grand Cherokee to an EPA estimated 18 mpgcity and a less-than-impressive 23mpghighway yielding 450 miles between fill-ups. These numbers are superior superi-or to those of the available equivalent gasoline engines, en-gines, but still leave room for improvement when one factors in the price of diesel die-sel nearly $4gallon and the competition's healthier fuel economy. During mixed city, highway, high-way, and off-road driving the engine is user friendly and it provides plenty of power for any situation. Acceleration is surprisingly surpris-ingly strong. Buyers will need a little time behind the wheel to get used to light, turbo-induced lag when accelerating from a dead stop. If it worries you that the little 3.0L V6 is almost half the size of the optional 5.7L Hemi V8, worry no more. The turbo diesel's torque is equal to that of the big, thirsty Hemi, with all 376 lb-ft of torque available as low as 1600 rpm. This power pow-er makes the Grand Cherokee Chero-kee capable of towing up to 7,400 lbs. Strangely, the tow package is about the only thing that's not standard equipment on the Limited 4WD, and you'll need to shell out an extra $280 for it. Luxurious as this Grand Cherokee is, it is a Jeep, and carries the Trail Rated badge, so you know you are getting an off road-capable beast. The Quadra-Trac Quadra-Trac II full-time 4WD is outstanding, and this Jeep finds traction even where it's not available. The suspension controls body movements very well, and passengers feel secure and comfortable even when the path is very rough. On and off road, the Grand Cherokee Chero-kee feels very planted and confident. This vehicle would be ideal ide-al for a family of four. The interior' is very attractive. Sure hard plastics abound, but the textures and colors col-ors are nice; the khaki and gray color scheme make a pleasant blend inside the vehicle. The leather seats are comfortable, especially the front buckets. Thoughtful stowage compartments com-partments and cup holders are scattered throughout the interior, both front and rear. The heated seats both front rear seats-pleased seats-pleased the most demanding demand-ing passengers, and the dual climate control was simple and worked very well. The remote starter came in handy on a cold morning, and the Jeep was all warmed up before its driver was ready to jump in. The Premium Boston Acoustics sound system left nothing to be desired, with enough powerful, distortion-free output even at half volume to turn heads and satisfy most serious sound system enthusiasts. There was however something some-thing eerie about the stereo dash: Unusable buttons. Jeep's Uconnect feature for Bluetooth-enabled phones was not activated. It would be nice to either have other buttons or no buttons at all, rather than telling me or finger-curious passengersthat passen-gersthat my $40k Jeep lacked some features. Nevertheless Nev-ertheless the system does include a back-up camera and rear distance radar that proved to be handy and driver-friendly. Complaints about the Grand Cherokee are certainly cer-tainly few. Side-to-side leg room for the driver is narrow, and hard plastics from the driver's door occasionally oc-casionally encroach painfully pain-fully on that space. Power seat adjustments are difficult diffi-cult to make with the doors closed, as the gap between the doors and the buttons is very narrow. The middle seat of the rear bench feels similar to a hard, wood bench. But in the end the 2008 Grand Cherokee is modern mod-ern and loaded with safety equipment, including front and side air bags, traction control, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Pleasant? Pleas-ant? Yes, Powerful? Also yes. Practical? As long as the head count is four or less. Base Price -$29,250 BEST. DODVSIIOP PIIACTICES rOR LESS!
