JW Margy Layton appointed to Library Board The Best of the West fly casting competition was held last week at the International Sportsman Expo. Auston Hatfield, 14, of Springville, competed in his age group and took first place with a cast of 76 feet 7 inches. Auston also took first place at the same competition in 2006 with a cast of 68 feet 6 inches. Auston is the son of Todd and Kathi Hatfield and the grandson of Craig and Betty Hatfield, all of Springville. He is also the grandson of Jim and Diane Horrocks of Spanish Fork. Brookside teacher gets Crystal Apple Award The Springville City Council has appointed Margy Mar-gy Layton to the Library Board. Library Director Pam Vaughn says "Margy will be a huge asset to the board because of her knowledge of Springville and its citizens' citi-zens' and her past ownership owner-ship of the Read Leaf bookstore." book-store." Margy grew up in Massachusetts, Mas-sachusetts, only minutes away from Concord, steeped in revolutionary and literary history. She spent her childhood enjoying enjoy-ing canoe trips on the Concord Con-cord River, which flows under the North Bridge, and taking swimming lessons les-sons in Walden Pond. At 18, she spent the summer sum-mer traveling across country coun-try with her family to start her freshman year at BYU where she earned a very practical master's degree in political science before marrying her husband, Roger, in 1990. Four years later they made their home in Springville. Their son Jack was born in 1999. After spending a decade working as a writer, editor and marketing manager in the computer industry and teaching writing classes at Utah Valley State College, Margy and Roger decided decid-ed to open the Read Leaf bookstore on Springville's Main Street. That happy adventure lasted eight wonderful years. Since closing the business, busi-ness, Margy has enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom and getting involved with a variety of interesting projects, proj-ects, including working as substitute school librarian and as a guest curator for an exhibit of original illustrations illus-trations from children's books, which will open at the Springville Museum of Art in September. , Shane Draper, the science sci-ence and fifth-grade math teacher at Brookside Elementary, El-ementary, has been awarded award-ed the 2007-2008 Crystal 4 , Shane Draper Aaron Frye, a Certified Journeyman Farrier and former President of the Utah Horseshoer's Guild recently competed in Lexington, KY at the national convention of the American Farriers Association. Aaron placed in the top five, qualifying for the American Farriers Team. Due to intensive travel he declined, as it would require so much time away from his family. This was a big accomplishment and his family is proud of him! Frye is a full-time full-time horseshoer and lives in Lakeshore with his wife and two children. I if "''' I ..'..izrrhlu liLl: : - Thursday night the Reagan Academy music department was excited to present a Philharmonic concert that consisted of the combined Advanced Orchestra and Symphonic Band. Each group performed separately pieces such as Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" and Vivaldi's "Concerto in A Minor." They then combined to perform Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" and a medley from Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean." This is the first time that the Reagan Academy band and orchestra has collaborated for such a performance and found it to be a great success! msm-mmKmm".: ; iiiiiiiiii v V The contestants lined up, got their mouths ready, their teeth primed and then came the signal "Go," and the charving began. Students competed to chew their piece of cheese into the shape chosen within one minute. The results were comical, messy and surprisingly great.
