Show j ww 'pn w p Thursday, March 27, 2008 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Parent meeting Teams needed for Art City Days 'Survivor (Men Continued from page 2 can make all the difference differ-ence in a young person's life. Right now, in this state, alcohol use among children and adolescents starts and increases rapidly rap-idly with age. A higher percentage of youth aged 12 to 20 use alcohol (29) than use tobacco (24) or illicit drugs (14), making underage drinking a leading lead-ing public health problem in the United Sates, and Springville is no exception. excep-tion. " This meeting is part of a national effort to increase understanding and awareness aware-ness of underage drinking and its consequences. Your teen needs you now as much as ever. To keep your teen safe and healthy, may we suggest the following: 1. Encourage your teens to make each moment mo-ment count. Your teens are only on high school once. They will only have one graduation from high school. Let them know you don't want them to miss ouf on things because be-cause of bad choices, like drinking or drug use. One bad choice could change their lives forever. 2. Provide safe alternatives. alter-natives. Parties abound during senior year. Encourage En-courage your kids to attend at-tend the school sponsored graduation parity, where you know there will be chaperones and, most importantly, im-portantly, no drinking. Plan on volunteering in some way to help make the school party a success. suc-cess. 3. Set a good example. Don't let anyone convince you that it's a good idea for teens to drink or use marijuana under your supervision. It sends the wrong message and may lead your teen to make other bad choices that may have devastating consequences. Springville Recreation and the Art City Days Committee Com-mittee have added a new event "Corporate Survivor Challenge" to the line up of Art City Days Activities. The event will be loosely based on the television show "Survivor" with six tribes competing in challenges chal-lenges during the week of Art City Days. Ultimately, only one survivor sur-vivor will be left and will be crowned the "Ultimate Survivor." - :i Civic center Continued from page 2 "We believe the updated facilities are going to allow us to better and more efficiently effi-ciently serve the citizens," said Springville City Administrator Admin-istrator Troy Fitzgerald. The exact date for construction con-struction to begin on the new facilities has not yet been set, but it could happen hap-pen as early as May, Fitzgerald said. The city is now accepting bids for the new civic center and fire station projects and the city council is expect to consider the bids on April 15, he said. For the time being, the old city building will remain re-main standing, "It will stay up and continue to house the library even after the (new) civic center is completed," com-pleted," Fitzgerald said. Access to city services and offices will continue in the current city building dur ing construction. The new city building build-ing will include just over 70,000 square feet of space, while the new fire station will measure approximately ap-proximately 17,500 square feet. The fire station will be a two-story structure with no basement and include some unfinished space on the second floor for future living quarters. The new city hall will have two stories as well and a basement. About 10,000 square feet in the basement will remain unfinished un-finished to accommodate future growth. Open areas , have been designed into the building's plan to allow for expansion in various work groups, Fitzgerald said.
