Show PAGE EIGHT PROVO (UTAH) SUNDAY HERALD, - - SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 23. 1911 Freight trains Going Fancy Santa Fe Starts a Diesel One VfT- f r'- J ! r . ; , BY CHARLES F. A. MANN NEA Special Correspondent CHICAGO, Feb. 22 The world's first practical, mainline freight locomotive powered by a Diesel engine has just gone into service on the Santa Fe railroad. The first of two giant 5400-horsepower locomotives boasting a starting effort ef-fort nearly 50 per cent greater than the most powerful freight locomotive lo-comotive previously in use is now making its initial runs west from Chicago. It doesn't bear much resemblance resem-blance to the noisy, smoke-belching, picturesque steam locomotives locomot-ives that made America's railways rail-ways famous. The engineer sits on a soft spring seat in a fancy cab. Equipment Equip-ment includes windshield wipers, defrosters, automatic bell ringers, foot warmers, sound proofing and a communicating phone system to the engineer's helper, formerly the fireman. Lavatory and locKer space is provided. Everything is ciean and roomy. The new monster is made up of four 1350-horsepower, self-contained power sections. Each section sec-tion is 48 feet long shorter than the average boxcar, end carries a 16-cylinder, two-cycle, kAlC V-typc Diesel engine. Each power pow-er section carries its own fuel supply, with a capacity, of 1200 gallons, cooling radiators, and an automatic control system which enables the engineer to maneuver the four sections, semi-pcrma-nently linked together, from his cab. The helper, with no coal to shovel, watches the gauges, keeps tab on the motors. The locomotive weighs 425 tons fully loaded. Each of the 32 wheels is a driving wheel, giving I he locomotive a starting tractive iffort of nearly 200,000 pounds three times that of the engines Lhat pull the 20th Century Limited, Limi-ted, twice that of huge western A Santa Fe test Diesel freight on a run In New Mexico. Jr. lasiian unvniR Umm Limited As a motorist would you be satisfied ot your driving range was 190 miles north, 380 miles south, 10 miles east and no place west ? That is the absolute driving boundary of Fairbanks, Alaska, motorists, according- to Weston Loscy. Losey, employed by a gold mining firm, arrived at Pontiac Motor Division last week to take delivery on a 1941 Pontiac. When Losey gets home to Fairbanks Fair-banks after shipping his car from Seattle, lack of roads will confine his driving to 380 miles south to the hamlet of Valdez, 190 miles north to Circle on the Yukon 10 miles east to the town of Ester. There are no roads leading west from Fairbanks. Hard, daily driving will account for no more than 5,000 miles a year, Losey told Pontiac officials. Perhaps this is just as well as galsoline costs 35 cents a gallon. It was 60 degrees below zero the morning Losey left for the states and Fairbanks drivers had filled their car radiators to the brim with anti-freeze and Were using kerosene and lOw oil in the crankcases. A small fire directly direct-ly beneath the crankcase is indispensable indis-pensable for morning starting, he reports. Sixty below is unusual, he admits, but thirty below is considered "pleasure" driving weather. wea-ther. Freight charges are high and Losey estimated that he saved $400 or nearly half the delivered price of his new Pontiac by taking factory- delivery. Alaska is prosperous and feeling feel-ing the effect of national dsfense spending, the visitor reported. Fairbanks resembles ah army camp as more and more troops are routed into our Arctic possession and a magnificent airport is under construction. If you've ever tried to find a keyhole in the dark, you'll appreciate appre-ciate the fact that the ignition keyhole, on the 1941 Ford cars is illuminated when the instrument panel lights are turned on. It is the lowest priced 4-door, 4-window sedan Pontiac has ever built, and follows in almost every detail the higher-priced smart 122-inch wheelbase Custom Torpedo 4-door eedan. It is available with both six end eight cylinder engines. Advertised delivered price of the six is $921 the same es the six-window sedan. Eights cost only $25 additional. The new giants will run 50 miles an hour with 100 cars on level ground; or take -10 loads up a stiff 2.2 per cent grade at 20 or 25 miles an hour. They can' go BOO miles with medium load without stopping for fuel. A new type regenerative braking brak-ing system is being tested. At the flip of a switch, the powerful uphill pullers are converted into a steady braking system, which generates electrical heat for the locomotive. Five years ago Diesel passenger locomotives began to take their place on TJ. S. railroads. Now hundreds of them are piling up nearly 100,000 miles a day. 1941 Plymouth Convertible Coupe r 4 '.'.'
