Show PROVO (UTAH) SUNDAY HERALD, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1941 PAGE FOUR 0IE1 CHAMBER POdSORS HIM Considerable work has been done by the Orem chamber of commerce in locating: a sheep trail through this community in order to divert the traffic of sheep from our public highways. Early in the season a road for the sheep trail had been made, missing- all the northern towns, but going directly through the heart of Orem. At the suggestion of President Roy E. Park, a more practical trail was suggested, going go-ing up the street on the boundary line between Orem and Lindon, which is known as the Low street. A number of meetings were held with the state road cmmia-sion, cmmia-sion, Sheep afrid Stock Men's association, county commissioners, commission-ers, town board of Orem, state road surveyor, residents of Orem and Lindon, CCC and government officials and the officials of the Orem chamber of commerce. After Af-ter going over the road with these officials several times, it was finally decided that the sheep trail would be established here; going around the foothills of Mt. Timpanogos, coming into the main road in Irovo canyon somewhere near Nuns. The chamber of commerce com-merce officials feel that the stock industry is a vital one in the state of Utah and this will eliminate elim-inate hazards of sheep and motor mo-tor traffic conflicts. Iter reat Ion Project The Orem chamber of commerce com-merce has opened various' recreational recrea-tional projects and helped to finance the Lincoln high school band. The chamber feels that I'iiis is a worthwhile organization and docs much good to the community com-munity for the boys as well as Orem and the surrounding area. Early last spring, the officials of the chamber of commerce contacted con-tacted the Quick Freeze corporation corpora-tion of Los Angeles. California, in the hopes of locating a quick freeze plant in Orem, whereby they could handle vast quantities of our small and larger fruits to be frozen and delivered to the trade in a very appetizing manner. man-ner. The action of the quick freeze plant was deferred to a future date, but they did handle .considerable amounts of raspberries, rasp-berries, blackcaps, and dewberries last year. Tt is a worthwhile start toward a business which is modern mod-ern and up to date in consumer appeal. The agriculture committee contacted con-tacted a large number of our growers and ask them to place cards in their fruit containers thai were shipped out by rail and by truck to 111 parts of the United State, Canada, and Mexico. Mex-ico. These cards had return post-nee post-nee and were addressed to the Orem chamber of commerce. Each one told of the quality of the -fruit, condition" ar tHe time of 0". : v Sccra," OF COERCE EROUS PROJECT receiving, prices they had paid for this fruit and suggestions on packing and shipping. This corn-pitted corn-pitted an excellent survey of our fruit marketing conditions. A report upon this bill will be found elsewhere in this paper. The question of adequate service serv-ice oy our telephone company has been discussed many times with the management with the hopes of working out better arrangements arrange-ments for telephone use. The telephone tele-phone company has assured us that a large amount of money has been set up to be spent in the very near future for tottering totter-ing the telephone service in Orem. The chamber of commerce feels that the Future Farmers of America Am-erica are a ve'ry worthwhile organization, or-ganization, and was pleased to give worthwhile prizes to outstanding out-standing individuals of that organization or-ganization at a recent banquet. The committee on floats built a beautiful float called the "Ship of State." It had flowing satin sails and beautiful girls of Orem and caused very favorable comment. com-ment. Won Firt Prize Piior to the Utah county fair, the town board of Orem contacted contact-ed the officials of the chamber of commerce, and asked that they participate . in having an Orem display at the fair. This display won first prize of $250.00. The theme of thi3 display was "By their fruits, ye shall know them," and "All roads lead to Orem." This exhibit was a fine example of the luscious, 'highly colored fruits and vegetables raised in Orem. Owing to the rapid growth of Orem, it is felt necessary to have a post office. Mail at all times is being sent addressed Orem, Utah, and it is confusing to the post office officials because there is no post office in Orem. The committees have worked on this a good deal in the hopes of getting the proper results. They are infortd by the post office officials, an Orem city post office of-fice will in no way interfere with the t'.eli very of mail to the homes in Orem. Our delivery system will be maintained as is with the improvements of an . earlier delivery. de-livery. One of the earliest projects of the Orem chamber of commerce was to sponsor clean-up and paint-up paint-up and b;autification drives in Orem. This was carried out in the spring and also in the fall. Residents of Orem cooperated in every way and Orem was cleaned, painted, and beautified. Making a tremendous growth during the pasc few years, Orem in 1940 snowed an official population popu-lation of 2914 inhabitants. In view of the figure showed by the census, the city council, led by Mayor B. M. Jolley, applied for a proclamation declaring the community a third class city instead in-stead of a town. Governor Herbert B. Maw granted the request and declared the community the "City of Orem." Good Waterworks Incorporated in 1919, Orem city now boasts many public improve ments and a large number of fine residences. Its waterworks system is valued at more than $200,000. Pure, ice-cold, springs in Provo canyon supply the system with a generous supply of the best water to be found anywhere. Orem ha.s good roads, and much has been done in improving them during the past few years. There are more thin 45 miles of roads within the town limits. The city fathers last year approved ap-proved a project to cost $00,000 for improvements over a two-year period, to include completion of waterworks extensions, road improvements, im-provements, and park development develop-ment around the town hall. The city hall, the old Ktratton home, with its 37 acres of surrounding sur-rounding land, is being developed into what will be one of Utah's finest parks and recreational sites. With Orem rapidly building up as a city, home builders are rapidly rapid-ly being attracted to the community, com-munity, and during the past year a record number of homes were constructed. A total of $175,000 in building permits was issued during the year, half this being for residences and half for busi nesses. The city council has been behind be-hind every worthwhile project that would make for building up the community. One of the things the council worked for was construc tion of a sheep trail to route sheep off the highways, thus removing a traffic hazard and keeping the animals out of the mam resi dential section. The council, with cooperation of the chamber of commerce, was in strumental in bringing about an ; Agreement whereby the sheep trail will be constructed from the ft -," -v' , i I .' :-:''. . v- i ; ;.. r.. ; '.... .:! w" r t A J'i'-- -V. f -' 7 "- , J Ay.
