Show PAGE FOUT? PROVO (UTAH) SUNDAY HERALD, SUNDAY,FEBRUARY 23, 1941 AUTO INDUSTRY SHIFTS GEARS FOR DEFENSE By BERNARD CRANDALL United Press Correspondent DETROIT (U.P) Automobile talk . . . Chrysler Corporation is turning: out army trucks at the rate of 250 a day . . . Last year it produced nearly 20,000 and at present 25,000 trucks are on order. Ford dealers soon will be supplied sup-plied with a new six-cylinder en gine which will be lntercnange-able lntercnange-able with motors in all Ford lines. ... It will be Ford's first six since his Model K of 1907. Buick Shifts Officials Buick has made an "executive shakeup to fill positions in its set-up for airplane engine production pro-duction . . . Heading the project are D. E. Williams as operating: manager, and J. G. Hammond as. peneral manufacturing manager. Forty others are affected. Die shops will have plenty of time to "handle styling changes in 1942 models despite the crush of defense work in the automobile industry . . . Large die shops have not yet received many defense de-fense contracts and currently are at seasonal slack . . . With tool shops It's different they are overwhelmed with orders. Auto Payroll Near Peak Payrolls in the auto industry were second highest in history last year, totaling $800,800,000, the publication Automotive Industries Indus-tries estimates ... In 1929 auto workers were paid $814,000,000. Nearly all auto companies have announced that production in the final quarter of 1940 was highest in history . . . For some, 1940 was the best year . . . All are aiming to make 1941 even a Keger one, but Steel Magazine predicts production pro-duction will be about 18 per cent lower. Plane Making Speeded The auto industry's help for the aircraft industry is shaping up much faster than has been hoped . . . Ford, Chrysler and General Motors have accepted tentatively ten-tatively the job of makinr parts for 12,000 bombers . . . Chrysler is ready to install machinery for the parts production in th old Graham plant, while Ford has promised its entire River Roupe plant largest industrial unit in the world for defense jobs if reeded . . . Chrysler will employ about 1,000 on the job. ALARIES LOWER IN IHGOriE TAX WASHINGTON, (U.E March 15 income tax day will mean less manual labor but more grief for the average American. The Bureau of Internal Revenue is sending out only one blank this year and it no longer is necessary to fill out a green duplicate copy to be filed with the return. The "dup" was eliminated because the bureau decided that it "served no useful purposes." But the fact that personal exemptions ex-emptions have been lowered from $1,000 to $800 for single men and women, and from $2,500 to $2,000 for married persons and an additional ad-ditional assessment added to help defray defense expenditures, will odd millions of persons to the ranks of those who file returns. Further, there's one major hitch in connection with this year's return re-turn which has bobbed up for the first time since the tax system was instituted 22 years ago that will add more persons to the rolls. As the bureau puts it, returns must be made on tne basis ot gross income, rather than net income. In simple terms this means that any pciaon whose total remunerations lcr the year salary, dividends, bank and bond interest and "other income" exceeds the amount of his or her personal exemption will be requireu to file a return. In the past, it was unnecessary to go to ull the trouble it legal deductions lor such items as taxes and in- lercsi paid, contributions and losses frum lire, then, etc., dipped Uie income below the total per- bunai exemption. The bureau warns that all deductions de-ductions will be closely scrutinized to see that nothing illegal is at tempted. Ana nere s a unal word oi caution: lie aure to be consistent in com puting state and federal returns usual, tnose lined out for tne government will be made avail' uie to state and local authorities icr comparison. 1941 Oldsmobile Dynamic Craiser. Sed ur notice I: , Improvement in- lh pearare of motor cars, year by year, has long been as much a matter of skillful concealment of things as in betterment of lines. Cars could not begin to assume their modern beauty until designers had tucked the spare the away out of sight, placed a decorative grille in front of the radiator core, put the horn beneath the hood, and hidden chassis, springs and gas tank under sweeping fenders and body metal. Now Oldsmobile designers have The all-steel Fisher Bodies on the 1941 Oldsmobiles are without a single bolt or rivet, sides, top c.nu ilie Steel tloor are welded to gether and form a strong rein .wcea Structure of steel tnat has been declared by expeits to be the ijai-esl bouy ever built. S?cc!iard Glulch Dcon to otoring With one important innovation yet to come, a device that will permit the driver to take siestas while motoring, the automobile industry in-dustry forges ahead toward the Utopian goal of the super-me chanical automobile that will drive itself, according to Claud Hawkins, manager of the Jackson Motor company of Provo, Packard representatives. Latest contribution to the pa rade is Packard's much heralded electro-ma tic clutch. Permitting clutch-free, semi-automatic gear shift operation and permanent re tirement for the motorist's left leg, Packard engineers proclaim it "as smooth and perfect in op eration as the manual effort of the most skilled driver." Packard is completely tooled to produce the electromatic clutch which is now available. Packard dealers throughout the country are laying plans to demonstrate and sell the new clutch as the latest contribution to effortless, improved driving comfort. As Packard joins the parade of automatic clutch manufacturers, additional legions of "left-legs" are freed to scratch mosquito bites or play "mumble-de-peg" on the floor Doards. Gloomy skeptics view this mechanical innovation with alarm. "Nothing any more" they say, "is sacred. One of the few forms of human exercise left in the path of mechanical progress prog-ress was the free and unrestricted use of the motorists legs on brake and clutch." With the clutch abandoned aban-doned and super-highways reducing reduc-ing the importance of brakes, pessimistic intellects visualize a legless motoring nation by 1999. "Coulu be," says the Packard sales department in greedy anticipation, antici-pation, "(Joulcl be." Contract Awarded For Def ense Plan SOUTH BEND, Ind., Feb. 22 The Studebaker corporation has awarded, to the lowest bidders, structural steel contracts involving involv-ing $1,038,500 for three aviation engine plants to be built in Chicago, Chi-cago, South Bend and Fort Wayne, Ind. Largesl of these contracts, for the South Bend, structure, was awarded to R. C. Mahon company, Detroit, on a bid of $515,000. Jos. T. Ryerson and Sons of Chicago was the lew bidder for the steel foi Hie Chicago plant on a bid of $394,500. The Mississippi Valley Structural Steel company was awarded the contract for steel for the Fort Wayne plant on a bid of $129,000. Contracts for grading and footing foot-ing work, involving several hundred hun-dred thousands of dollars, at Chicago Chi-cago and Fort Wayne, are expected ex-pected to be awarded in a few days. Grading work is already under un-der way at South Bend. This work begins immediately upon awarding award-ing of contracts, indicating that initiative construction work on Chicago and Fort Wayne plants will be . under way shortly. A total of 9,400 will be employed em-ployed in all three plants which will be built at a cost of $49,700,- 000 for the manufacture of Wright 1 engines. taken another important step to ward still better appearance in thei;1 1011 models by concealing the running board. The bottom of th3 doors ttf th special-and dy namic Oldsmobile models, this year, sweeps down and out in a graceful curve that completely covers the built-in running boards. This has achieved the same trim appearance that most people admired in cars that have hitherto hither-to appeared wholly without running run-ning boards, yet has retained them as an aid to getting in and out of the car. Not quite as wide as the old exposed running board, the concealed type is nevertheless ample in width to make it easy to step in the car.
