Chevrolet soon will announce a new group of cars luxuriously ap pointed, and Packard is to come out with an extreme new design that is said to be low-slung, long, and one of the most revolutionary types of 1941. The new models are being introduced in-troduced as soon as possible not only to take advantage of the rapidly enlarging auto market, but to get them into production before the end of the year, which auto industry leaders generally believe will be the time when defense de-fense production, if ever, will begin cutting into car output. Market On Room Normally, new models or special spe-cial series would to withheld until the start of another model year. But the market is booming. Dealers Deal-ers believe the greater variety of cars they have the more they can sell, and the future prospects of meeting the demands are so indefinite that everyone is get-tine get-tine while the getting is good. Ford, Buick, Chevrolet and j Packard apparently had little trouble obtaining new tools and dies for the new products despite the bottleneck in the machine tool ! industry. PONTIAC SALES START OUT BIG Pontiac got away to a big start with retail deliveries for the first ten day period at 3845 compared to 1341 lor the same feYi days of 1939, a gain of 186.7 per cent, according ac-cording to D. U. Bathrick, general gen-eral sales manager. Deliveries also were 27.8 per cent above those of the last ten days of August. Stock3 of new cars dropped 3C9 units during the ten day3, while unfilled orders more than doubled since August 31 and stood at 4.2 times the number that were on hand a year ago. Used car sales continued to pile up new al-time records for the year with 10,008 sales for the ten-day period, a gain of 00 per cent over the fust ten days of ioeptember l'JZ'J. lised car inventories dropped 2590 cars during the ten days and 9,511 since August 1, and showed only a 22-day supply on hand compared com-pared with 33 days a year ago. Henry, president of the American Automobile Auto-mobile association, attributes the rise in automobile fatalities and injuries to "a serious congestion caused by the expansion of defense de-fense Industries, army training activities, camp construction anu the moement of large numbers o people to new employment points." Henry points out that gearing up of the defense program "has super-imposed a new burden on a situation that already is acute, more particularly in thickly populated popu-lated uiuus trial areas." "Engaged as we are in an all-cut all-cut effort to build up our national nation-al defenses and make this country ihe arsenal of democracy, we cannot can-not permit a situation to develop that will lead to the loss of lives and injuries, or to congestion that would inevitably slow up our machinery ma-chinery of production," Henry said. "Our workers must be protected protect-ed on their way to and from the factories. Their time is valuable and every minute of it must be saved for productive work. Per- be safeguarded. Henry explained that he considered con-sidered the problem a local question ques-tion and urged all individual clubs to join with traffic officials, civic leaders, plant representatives and leaders of labor organizations to work out plans for the solution of -heir "congestion bottlenecks."
