Show 20 Discover Dinosaurland Wednesday, June 26, 1991 Red ROCk trail beacons to hikers Red Rock Nature trail is a two mile loop nestled within the boundaries of the Dinosaur National Monument in Jensen. The loop shows off the desert colors in the flowers, cactus and other foliage that grows naturally along the trail. The loop begins at the Split Mountain boat ramp and is well marked and easily accessible. It is suggested, however, that hikers plan their two hour hike in the morning or evening hours when the outside temperature is cooler and be sure to take plenty of water along. Interpreative markers have been placed along the trail explaining the natural scenery. Things like cottonwood trees; shrubs such as squawbush, rabbitbrush, saltbush, and greasewood; and mule deer, cottontail rabbits, squirrels and sometimes a gray fox can be counted along the way. Though dinosaurs are long gone, their distant relatives, the lizards, are quite at home along the way. The deep red rocks and their formations tell the story of how life evolved in this area. The trail overlooks famous Split Mountain, named for the definite cut in the mountain by the mighty Green River. While visiting Dinosaur National Monument, one might consider a white water rafting trip through the Split Mountain gorge. Isii RED ROCK nature trail is mapped out for the beginning hiker.
