Show 16 Discover Dinosauriand Wednesday, June 26, 1991 Underworld caves appeal to the adventurer You've seen the Dinosaur exhibits, ex-hibits, gone fishing at Flaming Gorge and floated the Green and still have a day or two available avail-able what to do? Don't go to Salt Lake City! How about staying around and exploring some of the most wonderful, won-derful, adventurous and cool places in the Basin caves. Caving, better known as spelunking is a recreational option op-tion more and more people are turning to because it has something some-thing for everyone. Mom and Dad can get their daily dai-ly exercise, (which is also very easy on the pockets) and the children chil-dren can enjoy a day of wide-eyed wide-eyed adventure as their imaginations imagina-tions run wild with thoughts of indians, mountain men and bears who might once have occupied the cavern they are in. The only equipment needed to explore most of the Basin caves are a good flashlight (extra batteries batter-ies are a must), and a lunch packed in a backpack. Following is a brief run-down of area caves and what to expect when you get there. Be sure and obtain an Ashley National Forest map before embarking to quickly guide you to your desired locations. loca-tions. Big Brush Creek Cave: One of the biggest and longest caves in the basin with so many offshoots it would take several days to explore. ex-plore. It is also one of the most difficult to locate. Once in, you will be greeted by an "Ice-ghost" and a jumbled pile of logs, one of which is angled up to another entrance which is a gateway to tunnels which lead to an underground pool. Most of the walking is up-right with very little lit-tle crawling required. Be sure to dress warmly in all caves as the temperature remains constant around 55 degrees. Little Brush Creek Cave: Easier to reach (only five minutes walk from highway 44) than Big Brush, it is also large enough to gulp up most of your day exploring explor-ing it's confines (and if you get tired of exploring you can always plunk a fishing line in the nearby creek). It is rumored a pool is located somewhere inside this cave also, but if you cannot find it take comfort in the many different shapes and rock formations inside the caves walls as well as the wide variety of minerals and quartz crystals glittering your flashlight beam back at you. Enter the main entrance and not the side holes (one of which is barred off ) for family fun. Be prepared to do a little more knee work in this cave. Pole Creek Cave (Northwest of Whiterocks): Another cave with several side tunnels to explore. This cave is also filled with quartz crystals gleaming at you from the cave walls. Whiterocks Cave: This is the Basins "Cadillac" of caves. Located north of Whiterocks, the cave is shown off by Forest Service guides and includes stalactite sta-lactite and stalagmite formations as well as a wide variety of mineral min-eral formations. Be prepared to hike up to about 11,000 feet in elevation el-evation but it is well worth it.
