The dam is part of the Colorado "River Storage System and was completed in 1984. Hydroelectric power is produced by the Bureau of Reclamation at the power plant and is utilized in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. Those interested in the history of the area will not be disappointed. The Carter Military Trail now has historical markers which guide the visitor through the pages of time. The Red Canyon Overlook now features photographs and artifact of the Fremont-Ute Indian cultures. As the early settlers moved west many of the native species began to diminish or completely disappear from some areas. The Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and the river otter suffered drastically. In cooperation with the Ashley National Forest., Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the Bureau of Land Management these animal have been reintroduced in the Flaming Gorge Recreation Area. Bear Top Mountain was an idea spot for the reintroduction of the bighorn. Several were brought into the area and a mall herd exist today. The area has limited access and no hunting to allow the herd to grow. The Green River at Little Hole was the release site for numerous otters last year, but the curious animal have been spotted on the river near Brown's Park. Other species of wildlife found in the area are elk, deer, moose, bald and golden eagles, osprey and antelope. One of the most color areas is Sheep Creek Canyon which is a 10 mile loop. Pinkish-brown cliffs of the area are what remains of mud deposited in shallow seas and lagoons while the light-colored light-colored hills are all that is left of the great desert dunes which blew over the area. The lower Sheep Creek is home to the kokanee salmon which spawn in the river in late August Beside the trophy lake trout, a major attraction to the recreation area is the blue ribbon trouts stream in the Green River below Flaming Gorge. Ideal trout habitat has been made possible by enforcement of artificial bait only and a slotted limit Also a major modification to the dam allows wanner water to be released from the top of the reservoir. The float trip from below the dam to Little Hole is run by thousands each season. Access to the launch area is from a winding road just east of r Flaming Gorge Dam. There is no permit required to float the six miles of river, but life jacket are require and a license if members ' of the group want to fish the river while floating down. There are two marinas on Flaming Gorge Reservoir Lucern Valley Marina located on eh Wyoming-Utah border. The largest full-service marina on the lake provides houseboats, boat rental, fishing and camping supplies. Also Cedar Springs Marina is one mile south of Flaming Gorge Dam has boat rentals, tours, groceries, and other supplies and is adjacent to campgrounds and launching ramp. tf II v v-A f II ' P v i Bank...
