SjSDS)SlA)(Q)(l0Q The Vernal Vipers swim team staged their first major swim invitational invita-tional in over a year to rave reviews from those participating. That's saying say-ing a lot considering there were swimmers from 11 different cities and three states involved Two different dif-ferent Leagues were represented The 1-80 League and the Utah Swim League. The invitational included a mini-meet mini-meet (8 and under) and a senior meet 9 , and above with over 75 swimmers competing. With snappy sayings like: "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt," the atmosphere atmo-sphere at the pool was very positive and supportive among boih contestants contes-tants and parents. "We are so glad to be able to put this meet on, it means so much to area swimmers," stated Sara Perry. "It also shows the cooperation and support between the school board, area merchants and all the local entities en-tities involved with the swimming program. Without that cooperation we would never have been able to pull this off." Clubs participating in the meet included: in-cluded: Bridger Valley Swim Team (Wyo.), Cottonwood Heights (Salt Lake), Castle Valley (Price), Green River, Keams Youth Aquatic Club, Moab Sundevils, Red Devil Aquatic Club (Evanston), Rock Springs, Sweetwater Aquatic Team (Rock Springs), The Vernal Vipers and unattached swimmers from Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. The meet began Friday with the following statement from Bobbye Skerl: "You compete against your own established times and you try your hardest. You can never be a loser because you are competing against yourself. You are only a loser los-er when you quit trying! " With that in mind, the 75 odd swimmers went to work attempting to better their own times and support sup-port each other in the mean time. It was a very refreshing experience experi-ence to watch coaches and parents from three different states hollering just as loud for children they didn't even know as they did for their own. With meet director Greg Pittman keeping all the events running on time, the meet progressed quite smoothly both days. The Vernal Vipers Swim Team will be competing in three events upcoming The Moab Invitational, July 5-6, The Flaming Gorge Open, July 12-14 and The Bridger Valley meet, July 19-20. Keeping with the spirit of the Invitational, the following list is of area swimmers who competed and their events. It should also be noted that without exception, each and every Vernal swimmer improved themselves in one of the events they participated in. One other note, the Vernal Vipers would like to extend an invitation to all area youngsters regardless of ability or experience to join the sunshine and competition (not , necessarily In that order) during Invitational. - i swim team and share in their positive posi-tive experiences.
