Jeppson of Orem ripped out a three-run homer in the top of the third inning in the varsity game and ' Herlin and Eagar hit grand slams in the top of the fourth inning. The Utes' Brian Smuin added a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning. The three grand slams in the fourth inning inn-ing scored 12 of the 18 runs. Nathan Sunkees and Brian Oscar-son Oscar-son of Uintah powered the ball over the fence for homers in the junior varsity game, and Orem's Pulver, Cook and Mackell belted home runs. Five homers were slugged in the junior varsity game and four in the varsity game. I witnessed only one homer before the game with Orem in Vernal, Saturday and after the game had been concluded a total of four home runs were belted out into the cloudy sky. Lately I have been lucking out on arriving at just the right time for Uintah Ute baseball games. The first game that comes to mind is Uintah's game with American Fork. The game was scheduled on Friday and the Vernal Express had a big press run and I wasn't able to take off early for the game. I found out Uintah was behind 3-0 after three innings and I hoped that the Utes would not be ten runs or more behind when the fifth inning in-ning arrived. I checked back and found out Uintah escaped the fifth only on-ly behind 5-0. I got all of my newspapers delivered and dashed to the ball game. I arrived in time for the bottom bot-tom of the sixth inning. Uintah was behind 5-0, but at least I would get to see the Uintah Utes bat twice in the ball game. I was wrong as I was able to see the Uintah team bat six times as the game lasted 12 innings. The Utes did not score any runs in the first five innings, but they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and added three in the seventh to tie up the game and send it into extra innings. in-nings. American Fork walked In the game tying run in the seventh Inning. Nothing much happened In the first five innings for the Utes and so those innings weren't very important. I arrived for the best part of the show Uintah's run scoring performance perfor-mance in the sixth and seventh and thus I wasn't upset at missing the non-scoring show. Uintah and American Fork battled five extra innings before the Cavemen won the game 10-5 in the 12th inning. The Utes had the bases loaded in the tenth and had a lead off double in the 11th, but couldn't score the game winning run. I thought I would be lucky to see two innings of action, but instead I witnessed seven innings of baseball. High school games are set for seven innings unless there is a tie, and so I saw the equivalent of normal seven inning contest. The Utes were getting crushed by the Orem Tigers, 17-0, Saturday, but I arrived just in time for the Uintah game highlights as they scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. inn-ing. ; Brian Smuin and Daryl Hancock ripped out singles and Joe LeBeau was walked to fill up the bases. A walk to Derick Adams drove in Smuin and Hancock scored on an error. er-ror. Blake Horrocks and Quinn Downard were walked and LeBeau scored. A single by junior Blake Horrocks Hor-rocks knocked in Adams, which made the score 17-4. Uintah scored only four runs and they were still behind by 13 runs, but at least they got on the scoreboard. However, there was more excitement excite-ment for the Utes as Smuin belted out a grand slam. Kenny Mohar singled, but the next batter flied out to end the Utes' run scoring joy. The Utes scored eight runs, but Orem pocketed 19 counters for a region triumph. Tough Luck Bob Eastwood bogeyed the first hole of a sudden death playoff, Sunday, Sun-day, but it still won the Byron Nelson Golf Classic over Payne Stewart at Irving, Texas. Stewart owned a three-shot lead when he stepped to the 18th tee of the Las Colinas Sports Club course. Moments after Stewart put his tee shot into a fairway bunker on the closing hole Eastwood made a 45-foot birdie putt. The putt by Eastwood meant Stewart had to make a bogey to win and he couldn't do it. His second shot on the par-4 hole sailed into a bunker in front of the green and from there he flew the ball over the green into yet another bunker. Stewart blasted within 15 feet and that putt slid by the hole, resulting in a double-bogey. Stewart made another double-bogey double-bogey on the playoff hole, the par-4 16th. He drove the ball into a bunker but could blast the ball only 20 yards down the fairway. He hit his third shot over the green, chipped 12 feet past the pin and missed the putt Eastwood put his second shot in a bunker, but his third shot was placed within ten feet of the cup and he two-putted two-putted from there. Eastwood won (90,000 and Stewart (54,000. Knicki Hit Jackpot The New York Knicks, who have been without a dominant pivot man since Willis Reed retired 11 years ago, Sunday won the NBA draft lottery lot-tery and the rights to Georgetown center Patrick Ewing. Ewing, a 7-footer who took the Hoyas to the NCAA title game in three of his four seasons, will be most welcome by the Knicks. The Knicks lost their two top centers to injuries last year and finished with a 24-58 mark. The lottery replaced the two-team coin flip for the No. 1 selection, which had been in effect since 1966. New York and six other clubs that failed to make the playoffs participated in the lottery. Indiana was awarded the number two pick and was followed by the Los Angeles-Clippers, Seattle, Atlanta, Sacramento and Golden State. More Happy Times The city of New York, which won the Pat Ewing lottery, had another happy day Monday as the New York Yankees rallied for a 9-8 victory over the Minnesota Twins after being behind 8-0. Don Mattingly hit a three-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Yankees past the Twins. Ron Davis, a former Yankee", walked pinch hitter Ron Hassey leading off the ninth with New York behind 8-6. Rex Hudler came in to run for Hassey and Davis walked Ken Griffey. Mattingly lined a 1-0 pitch from Davis over the right field fence to make a winner of Joe Cowley, 1-2. Cowley, the third Yankee pitcher, threw seven innings, struck out six and at one point retired 12 Minnesota Twins in a row.-The Yankees had a number of other key homers in the game. Right-hander Len Barker yielded just four hits in seven innings and Glenn Hubbard's run-scoring single in the second inning ended Atlanta's four-game scoring drought as the Braves defeated the New York Mets, 1-0 Monday and thus one run kept both New York baseball team from tasting victory. The Braves went a teams-record 37 innings before scoring the second inning in-ning run. The major league record for most innings shut out by the opposition op-position is 48 by the Philadelphia A's . in 1906 and the Chicago Clubs in 1968. More Baseball News The University of Utah, using a pair of booming triples from light-hitting light-hitting catcher Kyle Johnansen and capitalizing on eight Cougar errors, struggled to a 13-11 Western Athletic Conference victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Derks Field, Monday and thus earned the final playoff spot for the four-team WAC playoffs Thursday through Saturday In Provo. Utah needed a win to break a tie with Wyoming for the runnerup spot to BYU and the Utes gained the mighty win. Utah scored one earned run out of 13. Mark Beavers gave up eight hits, including two triples by Johansen. The Utes have a team batting bat-ting average of .377. Ihr Hrlptul )U4a Mm" HURRYI SALE ENDS MAY 31. 1985 START UP YOUR ENGINES!
