Parker of Vernal, Utah are happy to announce the engagment and coming marriage of their daughter Rebecca to Stephen K. Boss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald G. Boss of Westminster, California. The couple will be united in marriage mar-riage at The Heritage House in Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday, June 8. While attending USU, Rebecca was an officer in the Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Faternity. She is currently employed as an auditor with Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Salt Lake City. Stephen is a graduate of LaQuinta High School in Westminster, California, Califor-nia, where he was a member of the water polo and swimming teams. He continued his swimming career at Bemidji State University in Minnesota Min-nesota where he was a four year Ail-American Ail-American and received his B.S. degree in geology. He recently received a Master's degree in geology from Utah State University and will be an instructor of geology at Weber State College in the fall. A dinner for co-workers, students, friends and relatives honoring Beth will be hosted by the Uintah Basin Area Vocational Center (UBAVC) on May 17 in Roosevelt. Mrs. Sweatfield is a graduate of the Dee Hospital in Ogden and has continued con-tinued her education with Utah State University, the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. When first coming to Vernal, she worked in the old Duchesne County Hospital located on Main Street in Roosevelt. Dorothy Thorne, Lucille Hatch and Mrs. Sweatfield were the only nurses at the hosptial. She served on a planning committee and worked at the hospital in Vernal when it was built and opened in 1949, and also worked for eleven years in clinics for local physicians. Mrs. Sweatfield was supervisor of school foods for the Uintah School District and served as president of the Utah School Food Association. At this time she had the privilege of serving on a national legislative committee following the "Hunger in America" study. For the past ten years she has been a full time instructor for the practical nursing program at UBAVC. This program pro-gram was originated in 1975 under the instigation of Jean Stringham and other interested local residents. Jean Smith was the first director, and has MARY GARCIA honored by Catholic Ladies. Mary Garcia is woman of year St. James Catholic Ladies club has chosen Mary Garcia as Woman of the Year. Mary was honored, along with several other women from Utah, at a banquet during the annual slate Catholic Women's Convention of the DCCW, May 4 and 5 in Ogdcn, Utah. Beth states she has seen many changes in the nursing profession during dur-ing her career and is assured there will be more changes in the near future. JANALEE MERRELL will be working for Senator Orrin Hatch. Vernal girls Washington Janalee Merrell and Kerry Jones have been picked by Utah political figures to serve internships in Washington, D.C. . Janalee, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Merrill, will be leaving leav-ing for the nation's capitol June 1 to serve as an intern for Senator Orrin Hatch. She will be doing research work and general office duties. She spent some time in D. C. in November of 1983 with the Close-Up program. It was there she learned of the internship offered to college students for political science credit. Janalee will remain in Washington for two months. She is a student at Utah Technical College in Orem where she was chosen as the LDS Student Association's Associa-tion's executive financial secretary. Following an interview, Janalee was picked from 50 students for the position. She is also a member of Lamba Delta Sigma Sorority which is for LDS girls at the college. KERRY JONES will serve an internship in Washington D. C. in the office of Congressman Howard Nielson. to work in this summer Kerry Jones is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Jones. She is attending atten-ding Utah State University on a leadership scholarship. After traveling travel-ing to Europe with her parents in the early part of the summer, Kerry will serve an internship with Congressman Con-gressman Howard Nielson. Kerry will serve in the Washington D.C. position from July 13 until September 7. Kerry is active in the student council coun-cil at USU and works as a news director direc-tor at KBLQ radio in Logan. Her hours as news director vary and she fills the remainder of her working time at the communications lab at the college. Kerry hopes to receive communication com-munication credit for her internship, but may have to settle for political science credit instead.
