PHOTO COURTESY OF THE EGYPTIAN THEATRE Acoustic bluesman Samuel James will bring his one-man show to The Egyptian Theatre on Friday, July 30. Samuel James revives old-time acoustic blues By ALISHA SELF Of flic Record naff The musical stylings of Samuel James are difficult to describe, mostly because there's no modern point of comparison. "There's nobody really doing anything like what I'm doing." he says. "It's difficult for me to say, Tf you like this, then you'll like this." If you take Charlie* Patton in 1928, Bob Newharl in 1957 and Little Richard in 1962 and put those together, that's something kind of like what I do." "I wanted to make sure that people's minds didn't wander into thoughts of a singer/songwriter sitting on a stool." The desire to detract from that vision is understandable - Kelsey's performances are anything but stagnant. According to a press release, he "plays every inch of his guitar and makes it sing. soar, pop PHOTO BY LIFESPRING PHOTOGRAPHY Michael Kelsey will perform a public show on July 31 followed by a music-making workshop, kids' show and private performance at The Egyptian Theatre on Aug. 1. and ping - by strumming it. pounding it and pulling every part of it or anything else an arm's length or foot kick away." He blends soul. funk, rock, blues and other genres with an unorthodox style of guitar-playing to create original sounds. "'There is a five piece band in my head," he explains.
