By JAY HAMBURGER Of the Record staff The organizers of the annual Leadership Park City training program are accepting applications for the next class, the program's seventeenth, through Aug. 20. Leadership Park City over the years has become a popular entry into civic life in the city, drawing longtime Parkites and people who are relative newcomers. The yearlong program introduces participants to a wide range of Park City issues, scheduling speakers to cover topics like growth, not-forprofit groups and diversity. Some of the highlights of the next Leadership Park City syllabus include: • An orientation to Park City and Summit County on Nov. 15 • An all-day session at the Utah Capitol on Jan. 24 • The annual City Hall-led City Tour to other communities in the region, scheduled in September. The destinations normally are not finalized until the months before the trip leaves. The organizers will accept a maximum of 25 people for the class, and there are normally more applications than spaces available. Organizers said they had received 16 applications by Monday afternoon. Weight will be given to the amount of community interest someone has, the chances of someone staying in the area for at least three years and their aspirations to hold leadership roles, according to an overview of the program posted on City Hall's website. Each person who is selected will be awarded a scholarship. The sessions normally are scheduled on Mondays from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m., with scattered sessions planned on other days and at different times. A diverse group of Park City leaders have graduated from the program, including Mayor Dana Williams and at least five people who went on to serve on the Park City Council. City Councilwoman Liza Simpson, who was a member of a Leadership Park City class about a decade ago, before winning office, said the experience made her a "much more effective citizen and community member." "You meet people, you develop skills, you bond with them," Simpson said, recalling the ropes obstacle course that Leadership Park City classes traditionally undertake and the roster of Western thinkers and diversity leaders who spoke to her class. Applications are available on City Hall's website, www.parkcity.org.
