Show f N r 1 AMY JONES BHS parents invited One of the goals of Bountiful High Principal Rulon Homer is to foster self-esteem among the students at the school. Not only has Homer offered training to teachers in how to promote pro-mote self-esteem, but a class in self-worth self-worth is offered to the students as well. Over 140 students are enrolled in the course, "Effective Skills." Teachers Mike Maxwell and Amy Jones teach principles of self-esteem self-esteem as well as give students the opportunity to practice them in the classroom. Students in the effective skills class soon team that Jones and Maxwell respect each one of them, and encourage the students to treat each other with positive regard. No comment or question by a student is ever criticized by the teachers, which creates an open and positive atmosphere in the class. Said one student after taking the course, "One of the first things I learned is that no matter what you are, you can change and become better.' ' In addition to principles of lf-esteem, lf-esteem, students in the class are taught to relate more effectively with others, to accept responsibility for their mistakes, and to find productive pro-ductive ways to solve their problems. prob-lems. Founding president of the National Council for Self-Esteem and author of the course, Constance Dembrowsky, feels strongly that an essential part of the course is parental paren-tal involvement. A frequent comment in class by students is, "I wish my parents could learn what I'm learning." In response to these comments, a two-hour introduction to the course is being offered by Jones on April 26 at 7 p.m. in room 516 at Bountiful Boun-tiful High School.
