Show Davis High to host state-qualifying state-qualifying track invite By TOM HARALDSEN SALT LAKE CITY-Vicwmont High's boys' track team earned an impressive team victory during the High Country Track and Field Championships held at Cottonwood High Friday and Saturday. The annual state-qualifying meet has previously been run by the Utah High School Track Coaches Association. This year, a modified scoring system was used, based on decathalon-style scoring, and Viewmont emerged with the team title with a total of 11,380 points. Second-place Brighton totaled 10,207. Davis finished fourth in boys' competition with 9,378. In the girls' competition, powerful power-ful Mountain View won as expected, ex-pected, amassing 1 1 ,030 points. Layton was fifth at 8,145 and Davis sixth at 7,933. Viewmont won the title thanks to outstanding performances by javelin star Paul Mann, who won with a throw of 195-3; high jumpers Taylor Judd and Steve Ballard, who finished first and second respectively, respective-ly, both with leaps of 6-5; and the winning 1600 meter relay team. Other top local performers included in-cluded Davis' Justin Beard, who won the shotput with a throw of 55-6; Woods Cross Kin Rawlings, second-place finisher in the long jump at 22-2; Davis Seth Geisler, who won the 800 meters in 1:59.29; and BountifuTs Brandon Wilding, fourth in the 1600 meters. The best of the local girls' performances per-formances was the Davis High medley relay team of Sandra Verb-brokken, Verb-brokken, Ashley Wagner, Sheri Arsenault and Nicole Robinson, which won in a time of 4:24.27. Several top athletes were out of town for this meet, but should gather for the annual Davis High Invitational this Friday and Saturday. |
