Show Just a bit of tourney trivia By GARY BLODGETT Sports Editor Here's a bit of sports trivia regarding the state basketball tournaments. Did you know that if Davis High should win the Class 4-A basketball tournament underway at the University of Utah, it would be the only Utah high school to win a championship in all four classes? The Darts won the combined Class A and Class B titles four year -- 1937, 1942, 1949 and 1961 - and the Class 3-championship in 1975. That leaves only the Class 4-A to make it a "clean sweep." To accomplish this is not only difficult, but impossible for some schools which never were, and probably never will be, lower than a 3-A or 4-A school because of their high enrollment. These include most of the newer high schools along the Wasatch Front. And of course, the same holds true for the smaller schools which will never be in the Class 3-A or 4-A rankings. But for those things which are more feasible, there are only three schools in the 82-year history of the state tournament which have won the championship in three consecutive years. Enterprise accomplished the feat in Class 1-A in 1986-88; Jordan did it in Class "A" in 1953-55; 1953-55; and BY High School put together three con secutive wins in Class 4B" in 1948-50. Several schools have won back-to-back titles - including the first two tournaments played in Utah - back in 1908 and 1909. When the tournament was dubbed Class "A," Highland (1965-66); Jordan (1962-63); and Provo (1944-45) did it. In Class "B" action, ac-tion, back-to-back titles went to Juab (1964-65); Grantsville (1946-17); Wasatch (1944-45); ! Granite (1933-34); Logan (1920-21); and Lehi (1908-1909). In Class 2-A, Richfield accomplished ac-complished the feat in 1887-88; and in Class 3- A, Timpview did it in 1988-89; and Bingham was successful in 1973-74. In Class 4-A, Skyline won two in a row in 1976-77, and Provo Pro-vo did the same in 1973-74. Of local interest, Bountiful won the State Class 44A" championship in 1969 and the Class 4- A title in 1982. Woods Cross won the 4-A title ti-tle the year after Bountiful (1983), and View-mont View-mont has never won a state boys' basketball championship. And to wrap up this bit of trivia, do you remember re-member winners of the four class championships champion-ships last year? If not, they were Bingham, 4-A; Timpview, 3-A; Emery, 2-A; and Duchesne, 1-A. |
