Show Mom fakes M shot at the Met and wins ft 1 M ' - Children Emily, Daniel, Carrie Sue, Nathan and Patrice, and husband Gregory Wadsworth are all very proud of Carol's accomplishment in achieving a lifetime goal of winning the Metropolitan Opera Auditions on Friday Carol took time out of her singing pursuits to have a family. She entered the prestigious competition for the first time this year. I Ij 1 i V V " I L 1 Prestel. Her studies also included three years of training from Naomi Farr at the University of Utah. For the past six and a half years, she has trained with JoAnn Ottley. In addition to the training, Nelson is a wife and mother of five children. When Nelson was 22, she and her husband watched a friend take first place at the auditions. "I turned to my husband and said I want to do that more than anything.' She has attended the auditions for the past 12 years, always with the desire to participate. Three years ago, the soloist entered but contacted laryngitis. Two years ago she was having her fifth baby. "Last year, I couldn't ven make myself go to the competition," com-petition," Nelson stated. "I made a commitment that I would enter the competition and take first place. This year, as I prepared, everything just fell into place. ' LaDawn Gardner, soprano, a student stu-dent from BYU, took third place honors. "LaDawn is really a very talented soprano,' said Nelson. Second place honors were taken by Eric Glissmeyer. "Eric is a student stu-dent at BYU. His wife has also taken state honors at the auditions, explained Nelson. The accomplished soprano has an impressive list of credits to her name. In May 1989 she was a soloist for the "Mozart Requiem" for the South Davis Community Chorus and Symphony Orchestra, under the Direction of Dr. Bonnie Winterton. In Dec. 1988 and 1989, Nelson was the soloist for Handel's "Messiah" for the South Davis Community Chorus and Symphony Orchestra. Nelson's accomplishments in- elude starring roles in such presentations presen-tations as "Desert Song," "Promised Valley," "Oklahoma and many others. Nelson also performed in "Hansel and Gretel" for the public elementary school arts program. Utah district winners are invited to the Rocky Mountain Regional Finals to be held on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Arvada, Colo. The national finals take place at the Metropolitan Opera during the spring season. At that time, regional winners will go to New York. Those selected as national winners will coach with the Mets artistic staff and will appear in the Metropolitan Opera before a public audience, where they will perform duets and ensembles in addition to a solo aria. ByJANIS STUART B OUNTIFUL A long-time Bountiful resident, Carol Wadsworth Wadswor-th Nelson, soprano, took first place at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. Audi-tions. Nelson took the honor Feb. 2 at the assembly hall on Temple Square. "Since the competition, it has been like Grand Central Station around here. The phone just keeps ringing, and I don't want to miss a single call," explained Nelson. The road to the top has been a long one for Nelson. After graduating from Viewmont High School in 1976, she went on to receive formal vocal training for 1 0 years.
