Show Stop sign proposal meets protest By GARY R. BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL - Recommendation Recommenda-tion of a stop sign and bar for Mi 11 st re am Drive at 1500 South drew criticisim from one area resident resi-dent who asked why the council was installing the sign if no one in the area had petitioned it "We've lived for years without a sign at that intersection, and I don't know why all of a sudden the council coun-cil is approving it (the sign), said David Piggott, a resident of the area. "I didn't come here to protest this matter, because I didn't know it was on the agenda, but since I'm here I will voice my opposition." He told the council that he agreed there is a large wall which hampers vision of motorists entering the intersection, in-tersection, "but we have lived with this for a long time, and there is no reason to change now. ' Councilman Leslie Foy noted, however, that outsiders driving into the neighborhood are not as familiar with the surroundings, and a stop sign would be an excellent safety feature. Mayor Bob Linnell added, "The proposal is based on the safety aspects as recommended by the police department and safety committee, com-mittee, not whether or not the area CONTINUED ON PG.2 Stop signs protested CONTINUED FROM PG. 1 residents want it" He explained that numerous intersections in-tersections in the city have been under study, and that this is one recommended by the committee to be changed. Piggott left the council by telling them, "I can promise you that this decision is not wanted by the majority of residents in the area and the decision is a very foolish one." The council decided to table the motion for a stop sign until after another meeting with the safety committee, at which time neighborhood residents would be invited to attend. In a related matter, the council approved a motion to add a stop sign at the intersection of Chapel Drive and 1000 North (Viking Drive) which will control traffic entering 1000 North. The council also decided to paint the curb for "No parking 30 feet south on Chapel Drive which will also be enforced during church hours of the adjacent LDS chapel and during school hours of View-mont View-mont High across the street. This recommendation was approved ap-proved by the police department and city public safety committee. |
