Show '92 BHS grad finishes sophomore year at U. mm- m Stacy Kay Smith graduated with high honors from Bountiful High School on June 9 and then hurried home to study for her physics and chemistry final examinations ex-aminations at the University of Utah. At age 17 she is both a high school senior and a college sophomore. Instead of attending her senior year at Bountiful High, Stacy was admitted early to the University Uni-versity of Utah on two scholarships. scholar-ships. She received one of only two Early Admission Honors at Entrance Scholarships awarded in the fall of 1991. She also was awarded one of the first ACCESS scholarships, funded by the National Science Foundation, for young women who excel in math and science. The ACCESS scholarship program, pro-gram, which began summer quarter 1991, was developed by University of Utah College of Science Dean Hugo Rossi to provide encouragement and support sup-port for young women interested in math, science and engineering. engineer-ing. The 1991 summer quarter was not Stacy's first introduction to university work. During the summer of 1990, between her sophomore and junior years in high school, Stacy was selected to participate in the U. of U. biology department's Howard Hughes Research Program for high school seniors. Stacy is in the University's Honors Program and has selected chemical engineering as her major. At this point, her interests in-terests are in environmental and biomedical areas. This summer she will be working in the research re-search laboratory of U. of U. Dean of Engineering David Pershing, Per-shing, also a chemical engineer. In addition to her academic interests, in-terests, Stacy is involved in student stu-dent government and organizations organiza-tions at the U. She was elected to represent the College of Engineering Engi-neering in the ASUU Assembly for 1992-93, and she is a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Stacy is the daughter of Dr. Cecelia H. Foxley and Dr. Arthur Ar-thur E. Smith of Bountiful and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vestil S. Harrison, Centerville. |
