Show Good Bears Fire e Awareness Day to be held June 20 Lisa Chadwick, a North Salt Lake citizen, is the Chairbear of the Utah Den of Good Bears of the World. This charity raises money to buy bears that policeman cany in their cars until some child, who has been through a traumatic event, needs a friend. The Good Bears will sponsor a fire awareness day on June 20. Several months ago, the story begins, a 3-year-old boy sat on a gumey in a corner of the emergency room in Davis North Hospital in Layton following a traffic accident. The child was trembling, confused, and not sure what had happened to his mother, who had been taken for X-rays. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper sat trying to comfort the child, with little success, untilthe trooper remembered re-membered the teddy bear that was in his car. When the trooper returned to the emergency room with the bear, the j-year-old leapt from the chair, grabbed the bear and proceeded to hug the stuffing out of him. He still wasn't sure where his mother was, but now he had a friend to keep him company. Although the bear given to the little boy was not donated by the Bears That Care Den, the den recently re-cently presented the Utah Highway Patrol with 40 Good Bears to ride with UHP Troopers waiting for that special moment when a friend is needed. Last October, a gift of 25 bears and bunnies were presented to children in Shriner's Hospital by Chadwick. On June 20 the Salt Lake Fire Department will receive a gift of 25 bears at the first annual Good Bear Fire Awareness Day at Riverside Park (700 N. 1500 West) in Ro Park. The members of the Be,re That Care Den, along with represe., tatives from the Salt Lake Fire Department, will be at the park for a pre-Father's Day outing to discuss fire awareness and raise funds to purchase bears to donate to oth. community hospitals and organ iz. I tions that deal with trauma situations. situa-tions. An antique fire engine will be on display and the children can enjoy the tales of Lone Star Bear, who will make an appearance along with Skipper's Skipper the Parrot. Face painting, a fish pond, a kids rummage rum-mage sale (with no item exceeding $1) and lots of Bear-aphemalia will be available for children of all ages, to help raise money for the charity. Chadwick became involved in the organization through her collection collec-tion of stuffed bears. One day she was reading one of her bear magazines, maga-zines, and she happened to read about the Bears That Care. She thought it sounded like a worthwhile wor-thwhile organization so telephoned to ask if she could join. She later decided to start a den in Utah, which she opened up last November, and is currently the " Chairbear ' of the Utah den. Chadwick's husband, David, along with two other North Salt Lake residents, Terry Denlein and Helen Ungerman are also members of the den. |
