Show Policy change for students with Aids FARMINGTON The Davis County Board of Education has given first reading approval to a revised re-vised HIV positive student and v school employee policy. The new policy will be considered con-sidered on the action agenda at the Dec. 12 meeting of the board. The major changes in the HIV policy are that it broadens the students, employees and volunteers definitions and strengthens the confidential con-fidential section. Some language in the policy has been modified to satisfy the needs of the district and to bring the policy into conformity with the latest federal and state statutes. In the area of confidentiality, the revised policy states, "The identities iden-tities or other case details of HIV-infected HIV-infected subjects shall not be disclosed to any person other than the members of the Review Committee Com-mittee and the superintendent." An emergency procedures system is included in the revised policy that will activate a Review Committee immediately in the event that a student or employee contract the infection. This procedure pro-cedure is required by law. When the board considered the revised policy as a first reading agenda item, there were suggestions from board members and patrons that two items be rewritten. Under the section entitled, "Procedure for reaching a decision" deci-sion" the policy read, "Upon notification that a student or employee has been diagnosed with HIV infection, the school administrator ad-ministrator or department head shall convene a Review Committee." The board agreed with patrons that the statement, "upon notification" should be clarified to show who is doing the notifying. Steve Sirkin, DEA Executive Secretary, recommended that the words, "with pay" be added to the Special Procedures section that, defines the method that will be used to suspend an employee. The board agreed to incorporate these suggestions in the revised version ver-sion that will be presented for action ac-tion at the Dec. 12 meeting. |
