Show First report on year-rdu nd school indicates success By DONETA GATHERUM FARMINGTON - "The successful suc-cessful beginning of year-round school in four Davis County elementary schools is a fitting . ... tribute to four school communities-the communities-the students, parents, teachers , and administrators," stated Dr. Richard Kendell," superintendent of Davis County schools after hearing a report from the four school principals prin-cipals involved in year-round schools. The reports were given at the Aug. 1 meeting of the board of educations - All principals characterized the first day of year-round school as the "smoothest they had ever experi enced. , Dale Barnett, principal at Columbia, said, "It's a great month to be in school. What else can you do when it's 102 degrees outside." Forest Barker from Adams, Elementary said, "This is a good answer to the reality of little money and large enrollments." He noted that the halls at Adams were less crowded and the lunch room was a pleasant place because- there were only 700 children in the building instead in-stead of the 1,000 plus that ar, peared daily at Adams last year under the extended day program. A PTA officer from King Elementary concurred that the year-round year-round program seems to be very successful. She said one child summed up her feelings by saying. "I'm glad I only have to learn one set of classroom rules this year." Last year King was on an extended day model and even the first graders were required to move to several different teachers during the course of a day and a week. '' At the same board of education meeting, approval was given to a report prepared by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Stephen Ron-nenkamp, Ron-nenkamp, that identifies high growth elementary schools. According Accor-ding to the report. Antelope, East "Layton, Layton, Lincoln and Woods CrosS Elementaries can all make application for an alternative scheduling plan for the 1990-91 . school year. This could include year-round or extended day schedules. Woods Cross already has received year-round approval subject to change for the 1990-91 school year. Vae View in Layton is projected as a high growth school for 1992-93 and Orchard in Bountiful will reach the high growth status in 1993-94. Crestview and Whitesides in Layton may also be identified as high growth schools in the next few years because of the population increases in-creases in the Lay ton area. The school district administration is now working to develop plans to handle growth problems in the secondary schools especially in the north end of the county. |
