Arishita and Shepard i will defend their titles; Tennis is a favorite at 177 pounds and Winderland, one of the co-captains, will not compete due to injuries. Wrestlers face WAC contests in Laramie Jack Gardner isn't the only coach concocting ways to out-do BYU for a conference title this week. Marv Hess takes a ten-man wrestling contingent to the conference championships this weekend in Laramie, Wyo. "I would expect Arizona and ourselves to be up there in the running," said the 16-year coaching veteran. Hess' teams have never finished below fourth in the tournament. The Redskins were second to BYU last year and won the meet two years ago. Sam Arishita, Utah's 118-pound entrant, finished the regular season with a 19-1 record and appears to be favored to retain his championship won a year ago. Entrants at 177 pounds will be hard pressed to eliminate Scott Tennis, the Redskin co-captain who compiled a 21-1-1 record this season. Tennis won a second place in the tournament last year. Utah's biggest success is Dave Shepherd who placed fourth in the NCAA tourney last year. Shepherd is expected to go even farther this season. Senior Balvino Irizarry (15-5-1) was second in '68 and fourth in '69, but failed to place last year. "Bal" appears to be in top form after recovering from an ankle injury. Heavyweight Kurt Bollock and 134-pounder Bruce Carnes have shown flashes of brilliance on the mats this winter and must be considered contenders. Bellock has not lost in his past 12 matches finished the season with a 19-4-2 record. Unexpected help from Rob Schissler (142), Mike Ptaschinski (150), Ron Holman (167) and Joe Davis (190) is virtually imperative for the Redskins to annex the team title. |
