Show Support 'La Causa' lettuce boycott I would like to ask all of the University students and faculty to help support "La Causa" in ft. lettuce boycott. For those who don't know what's happening lei me get you better informed. La Causa is'an organization headed by Cezar Chavez, who is not a comunistic, militant, overthrowing the government thing. Revolution is the cry from this organization "Revolution" you wonder? To many of you it may hurt your virgin ears. To me it's a social, economical class struggle to readjust the system in order to help the poor people's needs. La Causa is an organization to get ourselves better educated so that we can solve our own problems, to beat out job discrimination towards our ethnic group. Our boycott is a nationwide attempt to have better paying wages for the Chicano farm workers of Salinos, Calif. Many of you don't know that these workers were slaving themselves over wages of 45 to 64 cents an hour, working eight hours a day to support their families A blind man in Salt Lake selling pencils can make more than that. If you were to see the so-called decent living conditions they give these workers, the dog houses are better built. That is why 7,000 workers and their families went on boycott; they're out of a job, starving and are in need of clothing to fight for something 1 think is right. In 1911, the so-called Teamsters Union was organized to help us, but now they're so powerful, owning 70 percent of all crops in the U.S. and short-changing and putting half the money in their pocket; if these unions cannot bend down and at least give us a nickel more to help us, something is wrong. They put Cezar Chavez in jail, fining him $45,000 making up an excuse saying he went on strike illegally, with the courts not giving us more detail, and then letting Cezar out three months later because they knew the boycott would go on. If someone can prove to me this is justice, liberty in America, I'll eat my sombero. So those who care, in the name of humanity, help us. Please send your contributions. We hope to get mostly canned goods, protein, warm clothing, so drop it off anytime at 70 N Street. If you need more information, call the Chicano Lounge, or call extention 322-8151 and ask one of the counsellors. These people need your help. Andres M. Carranza |
