Utah's dormant hitters finally came to life last weekend as they scored 21 runs in three games with BYU. The Utes won two of three to stay alive in the WAC northern division title chase. BYU leads with a 6-3 record, followed by Utah at 4-5 and Wyoming at 2-4. All six remaining conference games will be played in Laramie, so all three teams have a shot at the crown. Dan Prock (2.25 ERA), John Lan-dures Lan-dures (2.40) and Dick Hardy (2.76) lead the mound corps. Hardy has pitched seven complete games to show his stamina while John Nord-quist Nord-quist boasts a 4-0 record. Randy Bayer had a good week to raise his batting average to .364. Bayer is followed by Tom Kilgore (.320), Frank King (.310), Dave Edmonds (.309), Jim W h i t e 1 e y (.303) and Steve Mellow (.302). The University of Utah baseball team, currently boasting a 16-12 record, finishes up its non-conference schedule this weekend when Weber State and Utah State invade Salt Lake for doubleheaders with the Utes. Utah will be using these games as a tuneup for the big three-game three-game WAC series with Wyoming May 17 and 18 in Laramie. Last time Weber State and Utah met the Redskins came out on the short end of both games of a double-header, double-header, 2-1 and 5-3. Utah's spotty clutch hitting was non-existent and Weber pitchers had an easy time of it. The doubleheader with Weber will begin Friday at 1 p.m. at Derks Field. Utah State, with a 7-12 record, including two losses to Utah, will meet the Redskins at Derks Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Utes beat the Aggies rather badly in Logan the first time the two teams met, 12-1 and 6-5. Utah State is Randy Bayer, freshman infielder, has been a pleasant surprise for Coach Pres Summerhays. He upped his average to .364 to lead the Utes. |
