Show Help It Grow Xhe best measure of success of a newspaper is its influence in-fluence on the community it serves. And if we are to judge a newspaper on its influence and its ability to change the attitudes of a community, we would list the Central City News as Salt Lake's most successful newspaper. The Central City News has a circulation of 2,500 between be-tween 9th South and 4th South and 2nd West and 7th East. It serves a poverty area with a large number of white Mormon Mor-mon conservatives and a number of poor, immigrants, Negroes i and Mexicans. They are a pessimistic people who have been downtrodden too long. The Central City News is a paper for these people. It has had a tremendous impact on the community in its short history of only six issues. All of the writing has been done by the people in the community who have often been labelled by the middle class as uneducated, unskilled and unconcerned. But the people came out of the woodwork and showed up to put out six editions. Central City found there was no lack of news and no lack of writing ability. Virtually all of the articles are unedited. These people write about their problems; they tell their opinions ; and the response has been fantastic. But the greatest problem facing a newspaper is still advertising. And the Central City News, like all papers, has a problem here. After a month and a half slump in publication, publica-tion, there are prospects that the Central City News will again be heard. We wish it luck and invite University students to become be-come a part of our neighboring community and subscribe. 1 nre interesting reading will be hard to find. |
