Show Thinclads Set Marks; Head For West Coast After an impressive, second-place showing at the Beehive Invitational in Provo last weekend, Coach Pete Carlston takes his rapidly improving improv-ing thinclads to Fresno, Calif., to compete in the West Coast Relays May 10 and 11. This is the only remaining meet before the Western Athletic Conference championships in Laramie May 17 and 18. The Utes, who finished fourth last year in the WAC meet, are having their finest season in history and may surprise a lot of experts and move up a notch or two. Six individual in-dividual and three relay records have been broken or tied this year to prove that track at Uteville is on the way up. Sal Mendoza shattered the six-year six-year old mile record by over seven seconds by clocking a 4:08.8, a very respectable time. Dwight Staten heaved the shot 53' 10" to break the old record of 53' 1". Don Watson, just a freshman, broke the 12-year old long jump record by nine inches with a great leap of 24' 9". In addition, Scott Bringhurst broke both the 2-mile and 3-mile records while Hugh Voorhees broke his own intermediate hurdles record and Pete Meldrum cracked his own 3000-meter steeplechase mark in his first try this year. Larry Stott, Darryl Busby, Scott Peterson and Ron Taylor broke the five-year old mile relay record with a 3:10.2 clocking, while the 440 relay re-lay team and the 880 relay team tied the old marks in the Colorado Relays last month. The mile relay team will be one of Utah's top entrants this weekend in Fresno along with distance runner run-ner Scott Bringhurst who will compete com-pete in the 5000-meter run. Teams throughout the west will be competing. |
