Show Bringhurst Selected All American By MIKE JACOBSEN Chronicle Sports Writer Scott Bringhurst is an All-Ai All-Ai r-ican. He is the eleventh best cross-country runner in the nation. The NCAA cross-country meet was held last ""ppk in Laramie, with America's top distance men competing, and All-American honors hon-ors bestowed on the top fifteen finishers. Gerry Lindgren placed first in the race, and the University Univer-sity of Villanova took away the team trophy. Scott was the only runner from the intermountain area to finish in the top 15, and his 11th place is extremely good considering he is only a sophomore. In team totals, Utah made a very good showing as they won tenth place. High School Champ A Salt Laker, Bringhurst attended at-tended Highland High before coming com-ing to Utah. He participated in track during his three high school years, and he was third in the mile at the state meet his junior year and first his senior year. This was also very commendable considering consider-ing he only started running his sophomore year. Scott participated in the National Na-tional Junior Chamber of Commerce Com-merce Junior Champ Meet, held in Denver, the summer after he grad uated from high school. He placed plac-ed first in the meet. "This was the greatest thrill I have ever had in my four and a half years of running." Besides cross-country, Scott also al-so participates on the track team, and he is in Army-ROTC, and counter-guerilla. He recently set a record for the eleven mile run in qualifying for counter-guerilla. Dedicated Runner When asked why he decided to take up running, Scott replied, "I have always enjoyed watching people run, so I wanted to try my luck at it." Track and cross-country coach Pete Carlson is glad he did, "There is not a more dedicated dedicat-ed or easier person to work with, his running improves each week." Bringhurst does a great deal of rurining each week to stay in condition. con-dition. During the cross-country season, he ran between eight and fifteen miles each day, and now , he is keeping in training for the upcoming track season by running two to eight miles a day. "I have, been lucky with injuries so far, I only had a pulled tendon last year, and a broken foot bone while in high school, and neither has kept me out of any important meets." Successful Season Scott has had tremendous success suc-cess in cross-country this season. He placed first in a dual meet with Idaho State; second in a tri-meet with Weber State and Utah State; first in a quadri-meet with Arizona Ari-zona State, Arizona, and New Mexico; first in a dual meet with Utah State; first in a dual meet with Arizona State; and second in the WAC meet. Senior Bob Richards Rich-ards of BYU was the only one who defeated Scott in the conference meet, and he only won by nine seconds. "I came to Utah because Coach Carlson did a very good job of recruiting. re-cruiting. He is a fine coach, and he has helped me a lot by pushing push-ing me to better myself." Scott Bringhurst has given Utah a good athletic reputation through his determination and abilities, so our hats are off to you, Scott. f I ' . I ' .
