"Safety starts with you!" That is the assumption of 4-H youths throughout the state. Regardless of where they live, - who they are or what they do, they soon learn that safety pays big dividends. These young citizens participate in the national 4-H Safety program sponsored for 25 years by General Motors. Scores of adults work with the 4-H'ers as volunteer leaders lead-ers under the supervision of the Cooperative Extension Service. For boys and girls to become safety conscious early in life is the aim of the 4-H Safety program, says a 4-H spokesman. The program is beamed to youngsters in the 9 to 19 age bracket. A checklist of hazards encountered in everyday . activities becomes the focal point of many projects. Right now during vacation time 4-H'ers, and their fam- ilies as well, strive to stay safe while they enjoy swimming, boating, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, bike or horse- j back riding. i Teenage drivers are urged to take extra precautions E around town and on the highways because of the many visitors who are unfamiliar with the area. Older teens ; serve as extra eyes and ears for the elderly and the very ' ioung at parks, beaches, street crossings and the like. In recognition of noteworthy safety projects, General Motors annually provides county, state and national 4-H awards. In the order named they are: safety medals, expense-paid trips (one per state) to the National 4-H Congress Con-gress in Chicago; eight $1,000 scholarships. |
