Show p Open letter Band members berate article concerning high school band Sir: It is most unfortunate that your recent editorial "Appearances "Appear-ances Do Count" was not based on more diligent research, so as te have presented the problem a' bit closer to the facts. We are proud to be members of the Springville High School Band, and only wish we could appear in fine uniforms. Presently we have about 30 trousers, 20 jackets and 15 caps, all of a type that are no longer stocked by suppliers, so they cannot be added to. Even the 30 trousers do not match. So, you see, it was quite impossible for Mr. Barton to hand out 50 uniforms uni-forms to 50 band members when in fact, they do not exist. We did the next best thing and tried to make as good an appearance ap-pearance as possible under the circumstances. Band uniforms cost about $100 each, so proper appearance appear-ance for us is a matter of at least $6,000, with our goal of 60 or more members. It's as simple as that. Last year, band members raised $900 by candy sales, trading stamp projects and a donkey ball game. We hope to get some real community commun-ity support in the future so as to build up a band we can all be proud it. Perhaps you have seen the film. "Johnny Lingo." Springville Spring-ville probably wants and should have an "eight cow band." If to, it high time we quit our "one cow" attitude and unite to carry out a meaningful pro-gam pro-gam of genuine support. In future editorials we hope you will take the time and trouble to "tell it as it is." Sincerely Band Members |
