The event was part of 4rt City Days celebration 'as designed to honor out-tog out-tog individuals of the iiunity as well as the out-tog out-tog organization. Alberta Hoover Alberta Hoover, director of the Musettes singing group, received re-ceived a plaque for her leader-ership leader-ership in the field of cultural arts. Marie Whiting made the presentation. Mrs. Hoover is a native of Raymond, Alberta, Canada. She attended high school here and went two years to the BYU. She played the saxaphone as well as the pi ano. She served a mission and later married Bliss M. Hoover. They have four children and seven grandchildren. She has been active as chorister, chor-ister, organist, teacher and executive ex-ecutive in her many church po-sitions'-all her life. She helped organize the Musettes and has directed this group for 18 years. She has written and produced pro-duced musical entertainments of all kinds and has sung and taught vocal as well as piano throughout her life. Rex Wardle Rex Wardle won the Youth Leadership award and was presented pre-sented this by James Lawrence. Rex is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Wardle and received his schooling in California, Roosevelt, Roose-velt, Rockville, prior to coming to Springville. He is a navy letic club as a booster organization organi-zation and has assisted in developing de-veloping the physical portion of athletic events and plants and building these where needed. need-ed. He has been president of the Colt League and assisted in every way in this sport. His work with city youth has been constant and his assistance noteworthy in every phase of the sports programs here. Ralph Snelson man of World War II. He married mar-ried Anna Mae Bird and they are the parents of three children. child-ren. He has been an active Scouter in its various phases. He has been a coach of the various church teams and recreation rec-reation ball teams working directly di-rectly with the youth of the city. He helped develop the sleigh riding hill at Mapleton. He helped formulate the ath- Waldo Jacobsen p r esented the outstanding teacher award to Ralph Snelson of the junior high school. Mr. Snelson is a Springville native and attended the Jefferson Elementary, the Springville Junior and Springville Spring-ville Senior High Schools from where he graduated. He served as vice president of his junior class. He graduated from the BYU in 1955 with a B.S. degree de-gree in secondary education and is presently working toward his masters in mathematics. He has had considerable experience in photography and earned his student license as an airplane pilot. He is presently a teacher teach-er in the junior high where he has taught for the past ten years. He has worked in an official of-ficial capacity in the Nebo Teachers Association. He filled a mission and is a Korean veteran. vet-eran. His teaching has extended extend-ed into his church service. Grace Alleman Grace Alleman won the community com-munity service award, presented present-ed by Mayor Calvin Packard. Active civically, Mrs. Alleman was instrumental in assisting and pushing clean-up day, fighting for fire escapes on the school buildings, helping to see that kindergarten classes were extended to full time instead of six weeks in the summer. She has taken an active part in PTA for 18 years and has served in practically all of its offices. She was active in VFW aux., being a charter member, assisted in printing booklets and distributing them regarding regard-ing safety to schools and safety measures, etc. She has been a federated club member and assisted in the Art Tea committees, com-mittees, hostess at the art gallery, gal-lery, supported donations to furnish the youth home and numerous other worthwhile charities. She is serving on the beautification and shade tree committees, planning board assignment. as-signment. She has worked in church organizations in nearly every capacity, including teaching. tea-ching. She has supported her political party vigorou sly, worked on civic drives and was Women's Director of Civil Defense. De-fense. She has worked on many drives and surveys and is presently pres-ently secretary for the Art City Days celebration committee. Beautification Committee Final award was the award given to the outstanding organized organ-ized service group which went to the Springville Beautification Beautifica-tion Committee headed by Mrs. Harrison Conover. This committee com-mittee has put plans to work and come up with the most effective beautification program pro-gram ever seen in Springville. Dedicated members have planned plan-ned and then personally assisted as-sisted in making this city a more desirable place to see and reside in. The committee has involved schools, churches, city officials, private parties, industry, indus-try, state and even federal agencies along with highway, railroad, and PTA groups to assist in the worthwhile project. pro-ject. Home landscape improvement, improve-ment, roads, creeek beds, underpasses, un-derpasses, schools, highway approaches ap-proaches and numerous areas including the golf course have come under the influence of the "clean sweep" program which is effectively making Springville Spring-ville a city beautiful. This award was presented by Omar Hansen. Keynote speaker of the evening eve-ning was Dr. Ernest Eberhard of the BYU who characterized the award winners as "people who built bridges to others, rather than people who built walls around themselves." George Bird was master of ceremonies cer-emonies at the banquet. |
