Show Junior Rifle Club members get I year's awards Springville-Mapleton Junior i Rifle Club, sponsored by the Springville-Mapleton Wildl i f e 1 Federation, has completed their , first year's activities. , Under the instruction of , Garth Killpack, president of , the Wildlife Federation, the , group had six two-hour classes , of instruction in the safe and i proper care and handling1 of f i r e a r ms and ammunitio n. Along with the proper gun i handling, the boys were taught ) the fundamentals of marksmanship. marks-manship. At the conclusion of the course, diplomas were handed out and then the boys shot for awards. Two of the boys, 'Ste- ven Killpack and Mike Dunn ? advanced as far as was pos-r pos-r sible for them to go, in the t available time. f Out of 21 boys in the group, r five qualified for their sharp-r sharp-r shooter award, six for their t marksman first class award, four for their marksman award ( and three for their pro-marks-( man award. Each boy has to start with the pro-marksman qualification and work up as j his ability lets him. j Steven Killpack received the ( club championship award by f turning in the highest accumu- lated score of 2014 points out of a possible 2100. Mike Dunn I was right on his heels with a I score of 2002 points. I Ten boys passed their gun I safety course through the ( training. LaVar Ware, regional I director, Utah State Dept. of L Fish and Game, commended L the boys on their participation L and achievement and reported a decrease in firearms acci-! acci-! dents, especially among juven-! juven-! iles, since the program began 1 in 1950. Mr. Killpack expressed his thanks and appreciation to the parents for their support and to the Springville-Mapleton Wildlife Federation for organizing or-ganizing the club. He reported that activities will again re- sume in November for both 1 beginners and advanced shoot-' shoot-' ers. This will be for boys be-' be-' tween 12 and 18 years.
