Livestock steer carcass show results announced CEDAR CITY - The results of the Southwest Livestock Show Steer Carcass contest were announced recently. Cleve Weaver of Cedar City owned the steer that won first place. He received $100 plus a trophy that was awarded by Cedar Packing Company. His steer had a total of 91.17 points out of a possible 100. His brother, Kim, won the $50 second prize with 91.08 points. Richard Yardley of Beaver won the third prize of $25 with 88.83 points; Bart Smith of Cedar City won $15 for fourth prize with 85.17 points; and Andrea Yardley of Beaver won fifth prize of $10 with 85 points. Sixteen of the twenty-two twenty-two steers that completed the contest graded low choice or higher, six had a yield grade of 1, ten yielded grade 2, four yielded grade 3, and two yielded grade 4. Yield grade 1 have a higher percent of lean in relation to fat, and yield grade 4 have more fat. The carcass contest is an important educational part of the show, according ac-cording to officials. Some important characteristics charac-teristics of the animals are determined in this contest that are not seen on the live animal such as size of the rib eye, marbling, internal fat and rate of gain. The following donated money for the cash prizes: Washington County Cattlemens Association, Iron County Cattlemens Association, Beaver County Cattlemens Cat-tlemens Association, Minersville Land and Livestock, Grant Esplin, Gilbert Yardley, Wells Farrer, Darrell Matthews, Mat-thews, V.R. Magelby and Wayne Smith. |
