People just don't realize just how many books are lost from the library each year, said Bulloch. She also added that it is the people's tax dollars that are spent to replace the books that are never returned. "Basically, I don't think that people are aware of how big of a problem this is," she said. Last year there were over 800 books that were never turned in. Averaging each book at $8, the cost to replace the books would be over $7,000. "A lot of the books that are never returned are valuable and difficult to replace," explained Bulloch. "We've even had the police track down persons Tor us, and we were still unable to get all books back," added Bulloch. The problem stems from the fact that people think that just one book won't make that much difference, but when a large majority of people think that way it causes a serious problem, explained Bulloch. She went on to say that the library is there to provide a service to people and that it is the responsibility of the people who use the library to return the books. As an incentive to get the overdue books in, the library will not- charge any fines until after Jan. 31. ,, |
